I didn't hate this straight off or I'd have DNF'd it, but I read the entire book. It's not just that it's unbelievable--we expect that from steampunk--but I couldn't suspend my disbelief with cities on wheels, and that's saying a lot since I just suspended my disbelief for a steampunk alternate history where people travel to Mars by airship and can breathe in space, etc. Plus, let's get real, all of the seas have dried up and yet they are still surviving and I think there was rain at some point (I could be wrong on that one). It would be far too dry for people to breathe and survive. Plus I couldn't buy the Municipal Darwinism concept as I kept reading, especially given how long it had been going on.
There was plenty of action and adventure in this dark tale, along with some genuine heroics. Had I read this at 15 I'd probably have enjoyed it greatly, but I was past my teens by 2001.
Needless to say, I won't be continuing the series.
I’m sorry you didn’t like this. I found it really enjoyable when I read it a few years ago (the movie is ok but the book is better). So imaginative and novel.
