The Invention of Hugo Cabret takes place in 1930’s Paris. Hugo Cabret is an orphaned boy who lives behind the walls of a train station working as his uncle’s apprentice as the station’s clock keeper. When his uncle goes missing, Hugo has no choice but to keep tending to the clocks, pretending his uncle is still around in order to at least have a place to live. His life is hard and most of his free time is spent around his most treasured possessions: his late father’s broken automaton, rescued from the ruins of an old museum and the notebook that contains directions on how to fix it.
The plot is as complex and intriguing as the characters are. The best part of the story is the mystery of the mechanical man and the secrets that machinery hides. There’s a wonderful blending of the spiritual and physical in this book.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret will transport readers to a world of action and adventure. It's a beautiful story that is enhanced through illustrations. The story is told through both drawings and short paragraphs.
I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to both children and adults.
