You know when you're browsing for comics and something just grabs your eye and you pic it up without thinking about it? Now is the time to read it!

For this month's book of the month we'll be discussing books you read solely based on the cover. What was so appealing about the cover to you? Did you end up liking the book?

Tell us all about your picks in the thread below!

Paul Goracke | 80 comments This month’s theme gave me a good excuse to try something I’d resisted borrowing from Hoopla because I just had a feeling this would disappoint even though its cover had always caught me eye: Dead Company T01

Dead Company T01 (1) by Yoshiki Tonogai .

My gut was right, it is not good. It’s just a half-warmed over stew of Battle Royale/Saw/Cube/more with flat writing. True, some fault could be with the English translation, but there were too many non sequiturs (there were a few places I had to go back to see if I’d skipped pages, because the conversation just jumped) to just blame that. And they barely touch the animal masks of the cover, making it even more obvious how much they’re relying on the tropes of the inspirations to drag you in.

Don’t bother.

Chad | 1394 comments I read that last year when it was a hoopla bonus borrow. It stinks. My review was almost exactly the same. I talked about how flat it was in the very first sentence. How it was supposed to be like Battle Royale and that the dialogue felt like it was written by AI.

Evilblacksheep | 85 comments For this month I ended up going to the library and picking up whatever attracted my eyes, which ended up pretty good reads, but my absolute favourite was this gem:

La casa by Paco Roca

The House was so good! Very poignant.

Nancy | 174 comments When I saw Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, I just had to buy it based on the cover! This DC superheroes vs creatures from the MonsterVerse was surprisingly good.

I'm currently reading his latest book, El abismo del olvido, which so far is probably even better (and La casa turned out to be one of my top read of 2024). If you don't read spanish or catalan, keep an eye out for when it gets translated. I know the french translation gets out this month, I'm sure english should also follow.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for the English translation.

Saunter Saunter (sauntersaunter) | 1 comments The series I started purely based on the cover is The Weatherman. The colors, illustration style, and beautiful typography really got me.
The Weatherman #1 by Jody LeHeup

The book that I picked up was “I’m starting to worry about this black box of doom.”
I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom by Jason Pargin

Apparently I love bright neon colors?
