Phi | 4 comments i’m a few chapters in currently and i am enjoying it but it’s slightly confusing at some points - do things start to clear up soon? i’m definitely wanting to finish it but just interested in the pacing of the rest of the book

Catherine Brodeur | 1 comments I’m reading Babel now. I’ve been at it for 2 weeks, reading a few chapters a day. I’m at page 420. It definitely has become clearer in the last 100 pages but there is still not enough magic or fantasy for me. I might have seen 2-3 tricks by now. For the amount of magic system and research this book must have taken there is just not much results. It describes how the magic gets created but they rarely ever use it.

This was recommended to me because I adore Dark Academia Fantasy but even though it is set at Oxford University nothing feels academic, you don’t feel like the characters are in school at all only in that tower.

I found this book to be a very moral story that touches a lot of topics like racism, slavery, colonization, war, women’s right, sexual expression which all in all is ok just not in the current political climate. I love fantasy to escape and relax. This to me is just too reflective of current issues. It’s like I’ve turned NPR on yet again and I’m freaking out about the world collapsing. I will finish it but I’m just not enjoying it as much as I had hoped I would.
