April | 400 comments ✔🎉Challenge #11 - Future Classics
A Quarter of the 21st Century has passed; did you read any potential classics? For discussion, and the benefit and curiosity of our members please list 5 books you have read over the last 25 years that you believe will still be actively read in 50-100+ years.
Completed: 1/1

These Five Were Great, I Believe They Will Stand the Test of Time
1. 2007 The Mortal Instruments City of Bones (but the whole series) by Cassandra Clare
and/or
2. 2010 The Infernal Devices Clockwork Angel (and whole series) by Cassandra Clare

4. 2021 Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
5. *2024 Funny Story by Emily Henry
. *2020 +The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

The Future Classic Challenge - List 3 unread books published between 2000-2024 that you feel have the potential to become a classic. The challenge, read 1 of your 3 selections. Then let us know if you think it has a chance at greatness, or will it pass into oblivion.

These Might have a Chance at Greatness?
1. 2003 The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
2. 2014 All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doeer
3. +2023 Happy Place by Emily Henry
. +2023 In the Lives of Puppets by T.J. Klune
. +2015 R✔Poet Anderson...Of Nightmares by Tom Delonge and Suzanne Young
. +2023 R✔The Only One Left by Riley Sager

Book/s Chosen (I have to add another, possibly more)
1. R✔Poet Anderson...Of Nightmares by Tom Delonge and Suzanne Young Probably won't get enough readership to become a classic, but it really should. It's an interesting and wholesome story about fighting for what is good and true, even if that means fighting yourself too. Very inspiring for youth and adults alike!
2. R✔The Only One Left by Riley Sager 2023 This one has more of a chance of becoming a classic, honestly, than Poet, but it is definitely worthy of the title. Amazing!

Teri-K | 1062 comments April wrote: "Question-what does the 2023 books read mean? Are those three in addition to the ten from the other year?"

That's where you list the three you actually read in 2025, which I'm pretty sure is what it should say. At least that's how I understand it!

And welcome to the buffet! It's great that you know yourself and how you react to challenges, so you're being smart about. You can always add more as the year goes on, if you want to. Only the first one, Old and New TBR, is locked in on Jan. 1.

Good luck!

Wobbley | 2517 comments April wrote: "Question-what does the 2023 books read mean? Are those three in addition to the ten from the other year?"

Teri-K is right, that's supposed to say "2025 books read". For that challenge, you identify 10 books from a particular year that you are interested in. To complete the challenge, you only need to read 3 of those 10 books, so this is the space where you will eventually write in the 3 that you end up reading.

Welcome to the buffet! It might feel like you are doing a lot of challenges, but some of them are very low-key. For example, the "Future Classics" challenge only involves reading 1 book, and you only need to read 2 books to complete the "Series Books" challenge. Have fun!

Wobbley has already answered this, but I'll add that some of the fun can be finding a book that works in lots of places. Like, "Oh, I read this for #1, but it also goes in #3 and #6 and #7 and look - I can use it for BINGO, too!" It's kind of like a treasure hunt. lol

April | 400 comments Omg! This is hard! lol
I first just started listing all these books that I want to read and some that had to fit in the specific periods of time, but since we can overlap some books, I was trying to find ones that could... that's hard though, with my particular interests right now. I want to read it all!!! lol Actually, putting the year of books with the new authors is probably my biggest challenge...and with the series mixed in. I want to read new authors, but...well, ok, suppose I can START those series, so that helps, but the year I chose has mostly mid-series books, so I'll have to read the first one first or choose different books. ahhh! lol

Well, that's a challenge for another day. Past few days I have added a LOT of books and links.

Teri-K | 1062 comments You've made a great start, April. I read Ovid's Metamorphosis last year and loved it, though it's quite long and it took a while for me to get a feel for it. I thought it would just be a lot of myths, but as I read I began to see themes emerging.

I'm particularly fond of A Tale of Two Cities and Merchant of Venice. All the Light We Cannot See I read last year, too, and liked it more than I expected to.

Good luck on your planning!

Terrific beginning...and don't forget, you can change your mind as you go along!

message 23: by April (new)

April | 400 comments Ok, I think I am satisfied with this list now. After all of that, I think this will be easier than I thought, but who knows what the future will hold, lol so I made a relatively easy one, with lots of overlaps in the categories, as well as the books that will be the most easiest to get. I still have a large to-read list, but this should help take out a bunch. I'm aiming to read all of these (even the alternatives), and not just the two or six or, I think 12 is the biggest challenge. So yeah.

One final thing I might add is a masterlist of all of the books mentioned here. I liked that idea, however, I have a larger list with even more that I want to read this year, so... I mean, I don't want this to get confusing, so I might not add anything afterall. We'll see!

Wait, I DID make the cut-off in time for this, correct? *gasps* I THOUGHT I read it was the 24th. I am closer than I meant to be though. Eek! lol

message 24: by Wobbley (new)

Wobbley | 2517 comments Those look like great options! I read The Moonstone this year and really enjoyed it.

I think you have until the 31st to finalize Challenge #1. The other challenges don't have a deadline -- you can keep changing them through 2025 if you want to.

April | 400 comments Ok, so while I am still plugging away at a couple of my first novels, I did manage to finish a short story. So, am going to edit my challenges with an R next to my finished reads now. I believe it applies to a couple of challenges.

Edit: ok maybe just 1 challenge for this one, but i am practicing. Not sure the R looks very obvious. Also, should i put in the finish date?

message 28: by Wobbley (new)

Wobbley | 2517 comments Well done finishing your first story! There are lots of ways you can indicate your progress, and everyone kind of does their own thing. Look at a few people's challenges, and pick your favourite method. :)

message 29: by April (new)

April | 400 comments Okay, I finished my first full lengthed novel. Yay! Turns out, I only had it in ONE of my challenges, but it does apply to a couple others. I will add it for now, but still try to read those other planned books. Glad I read it though. While it was a bit sad and even scary(gruesome) at times, it was really like powerful. Ha! Hard to describe, but i liked it.
Adding The Stolen Heir (#1) for 3, 7, and 10

Alao, I forgot that the checkmarks are just emojiis, so I found one that shows up well enough and I like. 👍✔

Nice! You finished a book and you liked it - that's a good way to start the year.

April | 400 comments Was going to wait to post an update, but I have questions.
1) for the group reads, buddy... does it matter if we read them at the correct time? For example, if I cannot get a copy of January's read, can I still read it later in the year for credit on these challenges?

2) ok, did I just complete the series challenge #7, or is it 2 books for every subcategory? 2 for new series, 2 for continued series, 2 for completed? Not that I will not be challenging myself to read more of my proposed reads, but I just want to be clear on the rules. Thanks!

So completed Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief for challenges 3 and 7.

For your first question, April, we do not enforce any rules here, so you can use the books for that challenge if you decide that is how you want to count them. The point of the challenge is to encourage participation, though, so you might want to try to join in group discussions at some time during the year.

You did just technically complete the #7 challenge. Congratulations! It is only a 2 book requirement. I suspect you will add a good number to that before the year is over.

Oh, yes, of course i will join the conversations. I have been doing that with other books that were not in the current reads that I happened to be reading.

And oh, ok! Yay! Lol But yes, I do plan to read more. Thanks for replying!

Haha right?! Well, now i know I can maybe add more challenges next go around. Haha!

Thomas | 44 comments I also completed #7 already, haha! Way to go getting out the gates early. What next challenge do you have planned to pick off? Or are you just winging it and let them fall as they may?

You can always add a few later this year, if you want, nobody will be mind. After all, going back to the buffet after you finish your first plate is a tradition. lol

April | 400 comments Thomas- I am somewhat winging it. I am mostly prioritizing what I want to read sooner, and also what is available at the library. Oh, but habing scoped out all of the planned reads beforehand, they should all be at the library, so it is mostly by preference. Perhaps, maybe a bit on whether the items are checked in or havent gotten damaged or stolen. Lol

Teri-K- Oh, I mean, that makes sense, but where would I add the posts? I see many folks 'save' posts at the start of the thread, but i didnt know to do that. Shrugs

April | 400 comments Actually, I take that back. I did make a plan. I divided the list between the 12 months of the year, like 7 or less books per month. If i have a slow month, I can just move them to later months. I also have to account for other book club books, so those are mostly covered in the monthly 7. I also added a couple books i have at home, in case I travel, so I can read those then. I dunno. I mean, I defi itely planned, but the specific books... i think i am mostly sorting them by genres, so i have an assortment of genres throughout the months. That is where i can play around some. Oh! Except if i am reading a series or for my 2023 (pick a year) challenge, some of those require reading the previous books in a series, so those have to be read sooner in the year.

As for planning the challenges, I think I am just trying to equally chip away at them. Also, I made sure many of the books would fit in more than one challenge. So, I guess it is not really wingin it Haha

Edit: i think the fact that most of the challenges only require 2 or 3 books to complete and i planned like 10 to 15 for those, I am kinda surprising myself how quickly I will finish them, which THAT was not planned. THAT is why it feels like winging it. Lol

You can double them up in a post, like Challenges #1,3 and 4 in one spot, etc. I ended up doing that the first year, it worked fine.

Oh ok, great! Thanks!

Since I am already here, i will announce that I have finished The Phantom of the Opera today! It is possible I inadvertently completed another challenge with it, but I have to double check and update those posts first.

Edit
So yeah, I added another to my New Authors, but not completed- I need 3 more.

Oh well done! I've never read this one, and I think having seen the musical only counts for so much... ;)

Well done getting another one finished! Isn't it fun when a book works for multiple challenges? :)

April | 400 comments Added a couple more
The Merchant of Venice for challenges #1 and #6.

And a new challenge #4 (or #5? Somehow I found 2 versions) for short stories, that i may have completed already, if the short stories of Robert Sheehan Disappearing Act by Robert Sheehan count. 😅😁

Question- for the future classics challenge, can we use an entirely different book than oir suggested ones, or does it have to be from our proposed ones?

Nice job - adding more challenges already!

You can switch up the books you've picked for any challenges except #1. Your taste may change, or you may DNF a book you chose, or find out you can't get a copy - whatever. Only Challenge #1 is "locked in" at the beginning of the year. So have fun with them!
