This is the discussion area for the Buddy Read of
Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years #1) by Gregory Maguire by Gregory Maguire

We will start reading this book on Monday, December 9.

Please feel free to join in and read with us at any time :)

Description:
When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

Me too! The beginning of the book is kind of slow. It goes into a lot more background than the movie.

What was the occupation of the father in The movie? I feel like in the movie he was more important

Another difference is the way Galinda treats Elphaba at school. In the books she's not mean to her like she was in the movie, they just kind of ignore each other.

I noticed that too. It's going slow for me..I'm.juat at the part where they are at school. I have three days till it returns and I have to wait to renew. I'll pause then and listen to something else then return to it but you keep going.

I've finished. The beginning was so slow, but it picked up at the end. Keep on reading and you'll get there!!

I actually really like the story. It's not a different version of the Wizard of Oz but a different point of view of the same story. I like Elphaba and can see her point of view through the story.

Vaughn | 3843 comments I'm so glad that it picks up. I'm definitely wanting to keep going with it and you're right it is slow in the beginning. They'll be a short wait and then I'll be able to hop right back into it.

Have you heard from Leigh?
