Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Wow, I can't believe this will be my 8th year climbing Mount TBR! I'm excited to join in for another year of reading my way through my TBR.

For this challenge, I'll be taking a page from Katherine's book and updating with my progress every Sunday.

As I successfully climbed Mount Aratat for the first time in 2024, I hope to climb it again in 2025. I read lots of books, but I also bought lots of books, so I have loads of options to choose from for the challenge.

Good luck to everyone in the never-ending journey of conquering our TBRs!

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 1: Sunday, January 5th, 2025

This week I finished 3 TBR books, most of which I enjoyed.

Percy Jackson #7
I'm a lifelong fan of the Percy Jackson series and received the seventh book for Christmas, so I blew through that on New Year's Day. It was fun, but not as good as the previous book in the series. I did like the messaging about growing up and maintaining friendships despite time and distance.

Noragami/ノラガミ 1
I also read Noragami volume 1 in Japanese, which I read in English in 2021. I've forgotten everything, so I'm excited to reread the series and have it (almost) all on hand, aside from the elusive volume 23. The art is quite striking, although the story is still unfolding and hasn't fully grabbed me yet. I plan to read volumes 2-3 this week and finish the opening arc.

Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 27
I spent the last few days of the week reading book 27 in the Ascendance of a Bookworm series, also in Japanese. It was a more procedural and administrative volume, which is atypical of the series. However, it did have a few heartwarming moments in it.

I'm excited to continue the series once I return home from visiting my family, since I own the remaining 6 volumes in the series physically and sadly don't have them with me now.

Next Week's Plans
I've started reading El amor està en Seúl, which I'm halfway through and loving so far. It's a graphic novel, so it's a breezy read. I like the pretty art and relatable story.

I also hope to read Noragami 2 and 3 to finish the first arc. Aside from that, I may start the next book in the Ascendance of a Bookworm series. The synopsis looks very exciting, so I'm trying to resist buying the ebook version while I wait to return home.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 2: Sunday, January 12th, 2025

This week I finished 8 TBR books, which were all very fun.

El amor està en Seúl/Love is in Seoul was wonderful to read and very relatable. It had pretty art as well.

Noragami/ノラガミ volumes 2-3 got me more into my reread of the series, as I recalled why I enjoyed it enough to re-buy it in Japanese. The art is quite striking, the mythology and the characters' pasts are intriguing, and the moral conflicts presented are heart wrenching at times. With that being said, its presentation of some of the female characters could involve less sexualization, if you ask me. However, it's quite fun and I'll definitely continue the series later in the year.

The Craft of Research is a nonfiction book I started last summer. It's full of useful advice for research and writing, so I'll revisit it later in the year as I get into seriously researching for my thesis.

Yona of the Dawn/暁のヨナ 19-20 were my last owned volumes of the series, which I've had for ages. I bought when I wasn't very good at Japanese yet. I've read the through roughly volume 35 in English, about four or five years ago, so while I remember a lot, I've also forgotten some details. I'm having fun revisiting the series and have ordered the next seven books in the series to finish the arc I'm on!

Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 28-29 were action packed and exciting. I have four books left in the series and am excited to continue reading, as book 29 didn't finish resolving the conflict that started in book 28.

Next Week's Plans
I hope to read Ascendance of a Bookworm volume 30 and finish this arc. I also plan to read my new volumes of Yona of the Dawn, which won't count for this challenge.

Aside from that, in terms of TBR books, I might read 来世は他人がいい/Yakuza Fiancé volume 5 or 她的山,她的海/Her Mountain, Her Sea, which is a cute manhua that I've read part of the web novel version of before.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 3: Sunday, January 19th, 2025

I'm posting this a day late, but I finished a couple of TBR books this week. I didn't end up making it to more Bookworm, but hopefully I'll be in the mood for it again soon.

来世は他人がいい/Yakuza Fiancé volume 5
Fun as always! I've already read the series in English, so it was fun to reread part of it in Japanese. I need to collect the rest of the volumes.

她的山,她的海/Her Mountain, Her Sea
The manhua adaptation has incredibly beautiful art! It enhanced the story's healing, youthful atmosphere (with a touch of sadness) and makes it worth owning physically. Volume 2 comes out this year, so I look forward to it!

Next Week's Plans
I'm in the middle of 読書からはじまる/Starting From Reading (nonfiction) and 東京零年/Tokyo Zero Year (600 page mystery novel). I hope to finish them both this week if possible.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 4: Sunday, January 26th, 2025

This week was very busy, so I didn't get very much reading done. I did DNF a book and read another one, but I only read a chapter of my nonfiction book.

東京零年/Tokyo Zero Year - DNF
I read another 30 pages of this on Monday, getting me to about 100 pages, and decided that I simply didn't care enough to continue. The characters weren't particularly likable and the story was only mildly intriguing.

悪役令嬢は織田信長に憑依される/The Villainess is Possessed By Oda Nobunaga
I picked this up at random after DNFing 東京零年/Tokyo Zero Year. It was pretty run of the mill, with the usual tropes and an underutilization of Oda Nobunaga's character. However, I did have fun reading it, so I rated it 3.5 stars.

Currently Reading
読書からはじまる/Starting From Reading (30%)
This is great so far; it's all about humanity's relationship with books and how to integrate reading into our daily lives, but from a more philosophical, wide-ranging perspective.

Next Week's Plans
I plan to continue 読書からはじまる/Starting From Reading as my TBR book for the book. It's going to be another busy week, so I don't expect to get much other reading done.

However, I do hope to read some 暁のヨナ/Yona of the Dawn, since I bought volumes 22-27 earlier this month. While that won't count for this challenge, it would be nice to catch up a bit there before the end of January, since I'm trying to finish new books in the month of purchase.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 5: Sunday, February 2nd, 2025

I got a lot of reading done this week, although a good chunk of it was new manga. In terms of TBR books, I finished 読書からはじまる/Starting From Reading and started Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 30.

As you can see from the list in my second post, half of my TBR is in Japanese. It's been taking up a lot of my reading so far as it's my strongest reading language aside from English (my native language).

However, I would like to read some of my other books too. I'm anticipating finishing the Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 series in the next week or two and then spending the rest of February reading some of my other books that might take me a bit longer.

読書からはじまる/Starting From Reading
This was a thought-provoking book, but also one that left me quite confused at times when the author's argument went over my head. However, it is a book I plan to keep and reread in the future, with the hopes that I will be able to better appreciate the bits that confused me this time. 3.5 stars.

Currently Reading
Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 30 (83%)
I started this yesterday and read some more this morning. I have the blessing of free time since it's the weekend, so I expect to finish it today! It's very fun.

Next Week's Plans
Finish Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 30 and probably read the following book in the series.

message 13: by Abi (new)

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 6: Sunday, February 9th, 2025

I read 2 TBR books this week as planned: Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 30 and 31. They were both excellent.

Currently Reading
I started another book from my TBR, 後宮の巫女は妃にならない/The Priestess of the Inner Palace Will Not Become Queen. It's an ancient-China palace drama style story with supernatural elements. I've only read around 30 pages, but I like the writing style so far.

I was worried the palace related vocabulary would be more challenging, but my familiarity with Chinese historical dramas means the only difficulty is the Japanese pronunciation of certain words.

Next Week's Plans
I hope to finish 後宮の巫女は妃にならない/The Priestess of the Inner Palace Will Not Become Queen and then read at least book 32 of Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上. I have 2 books remaining in the series, so if I have extra time (probably not), I would love to finish the series.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 7: Sunday, February 16th, 2025

I didn't finish any TBR books this week since I've been ill, but I did continue reading 後宮の巫女は妃にならない/The Priestess of the Inner Palace Will Not Become Queen and am now halfway through.

It's a supernatural mystery with ghosts set in an ancient China-inspired royal palace and it's very fun so far. I like the main character and her dynamic with the crown prince, as well as the rapidly growing cast of supporting characters - mainly women - who work in the inner palace. The main character's responses towards everyone else's "it's a curse!" attitudes is hilarious, since she's very no-nonsense about curses not existing, despite her ability to see ghosts.

Next Week's Plans
I hope to finish 後宮の巫女は妃にならない/The Priestess of the Inner Palace Will Not Become Queen.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 8: Sunday, February 23rd, 2025

I finished reading 後宮の巫女は妃にならない/The Priestess of the Inner Palace Will Not Become Queen this week. It was fun, but not groundbreaking. I liked the supernatural mystery aspect.

The romance has potential, but hasn't sold me yet, so I'll probably read book 2 at some point to see how things go. There are currently 3 books in the series and I think it's ongoing.

Next Week's Plans

I want to either read Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 32 or The Hunger Habit.

message 16: by Abi (new)

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 9: Sunday, March 2nd, 2025

I finished 2 TBR books this week! The Hunger Habit and 推し、燃ゆ/Idol, Burning.

The Hunger Habit is a nonfiction book. I wanted to finish getting an overview of the entire book so I could check it off here, since I'll be working through its exercises quite slowly after this.

推し、燃ゆ/Idol, Burning is literary fiction, tracing the downward spiral of a high schooler who's a diehard fan of an idol, after he's involved in a scandal. It explores the dark side of Japan's idol culture with an evocative writing style. It won the Akutagawa Prize a few years ago and I bought it while I was in Japan in 2023. I really enjoyed the writing.

Next Week's Plans

I've started Todas las hadas del reino/All the Fairies in the Kingdom, which is the oldest book on my TBR by far, dating from 2021. I've read 61/569 pages and am loving all of the fairy tale vibes so far. I plan to continue reading it this coming week, although I'm not sure if I'll finish it since it's on the longer side and I don't read in Spanish often.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 9: Sunday, March 9th, 2025

I DNFed Todas las hadas del reino/All the Fairies in the Kingdom this week. I read about 250 pages, but I realized that I just didn't care for the main character and had no idea where the plot was meant to be going. Still, as this was from 2021, it was the oldest book on my TBR and feels like an accomplishment!

Next Week's Plans

I hope to read Her Radiant Curse while traveling this week in order to make up for the unfulfilling fairytale in Todas las hadas del reino.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 10: Sunday, March 16th, 2025

I finished Her Radiant Curse! It was really good; a very satisfying prequel addition to the Six Crimson Cranes duology. It more than made up for my failed fairytale book from the week before.

Next Week's Plans

I'm reading a new book right now and I'm not sure if I'll make it to any TBR books this week. I'm traveling, so my time is quite limited. If I have more time than expected, I hope to start reading 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Young Men Play Games Very Well.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to start 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well. I may also read Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 33 if I have time/energy.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 11: Sunday, March 30th, 2025

This week I read Tan veloz como el deseo/Swift as Desire by Laura Esquivel. It was by the second book by the author, and I enjoyed it significantly more than her debut novel, Como agua para chocolate/Like Water for Chocolate.

She's an excellent writer, so her gorgeous prose was a treat to read. The characters felt rich and nuanced and I enjoyed following their love story over the years. Recommended.

Next Week's Plans

I haven't started anything new yet, but I hope to read 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well. I feel like a broken record since I've had it on my list to read all month, but I do want to start it today.

I finally started 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well! It's exactly the vibe that I was hoping for - cute, funny, and adorable. I'm reading a chapter per day, so I expect to finish it at the end of the month.

Next Week's Plans

Aside from continuing 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well, I'm planning on reading おこぼれ姫と円卓の騎士/The Leftover Princess and the Knights of the Round Table. I've been wanting to read it for a while and I have high hopes for it, since it seems to involve some King Arthur-esque elements.

This was a great week for TBR reading! I've continued 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well and am 37% through.

I also read おこぼれ姫と円卓の騎士/The Leftover Princess and the Knights of the Round Table, which was super fun. The library has all of the sequels, so I immediately borrowed book 2 in the series. It's exciting to have a new series to dive into.

Finally, I started Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 33, which I'm 31% into. It's been a pretty good final volume so far, but I'm sad to see the series end.

Next Week's Plans

I will be continuing 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well and finishing Ascendance of a Bookworm/本好きの下剋上 33 this week.

Next Week's Plans

I expect to finish 你们男生打游戏好厉害哦~/You Boys Play Games Very Well today, since I only have around 50 pages left. I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't flesh out the relationship properly since it's a short book, but it's been doing a good job (they've met each others' families, for example) while still feeling cute and fluffy.

I also started 죽이고 싶은 아이 2/The Girl I Want to Kill 2, which is the sequel to a book by my one of my favorite Korean authors. It's a mystery/thriller, which I don't usually read. I'm about halfway through and really enjoying it so far.

Other than that, I started 浪花一朵朵 1/My Mr. Mermaid 1 and read about 8%. It's easier to read than expected, has perfect summer vibes, and is super cute.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to finish reading 죽이고 싶은 아이 2/The Girl I Want to Kill 2 and continue reading 浪花一朵朵 1/My Mr. Mermaid 1 next week.

I successfully finished and adored 죽이고 싶은 아이 2/The Girl I Want to Kill 2! It was an excellent sequel. If book one was a mystery/thriller focused on the lack of distinction between lies and truth in the digital age, book two focused on how to heal the families broken in the aftermath of book one's events, while still keeping up a lot of the atmosphere of book one.

I also continued reading 浪花一朵朵 1/My Mr. Mermaid 1. It's a sweet, cute sports romance novel and I'm really enjoying it. I love that it's not just focusing on the romance, but also both characters' career and personal life. It makes it feel more natural and genuine.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to finish 浪花一朵朵 1/My Mr. Mermaid 1.

I finished 浪花一朵朵 1/My Mr. Mermaid 1 and really enjoyed it. Yun Duo and Tang Yi Bai's relationship is sweet, slow-burn, and very funny and charming. The pacing is well-done - I'm halfway through the entire story now, and they've moved from strangers to friends to having feelings for each other, although they haven't expressed them to each other yet. We've gotten to see their careers, families, and friends, not only their interactions with each other, and so far it's been about a year in-story.

I like that the side characters also feel fully realized and not like they're just there to move the MC's romance along. (In fact, they're often getting in the way, haha!) I'm excited to find out Lin Zi and his sister's backstory, since he's very mysterious.

Next Week's Plans

I will start 浪花一朵朵 2/My Mr. Mermaid 2.

I'm about halfway through 浪花一朵朵 2/My Mr. Mermaid 2 and should finish it this week. I'm really enjoying it!

I also started 哀しい予感/A Sad Premonition, which is by Yoshimoto Banana. I've only read ten pages so far, but her writing is beautiful as usual. I'm excited to spend more time with this once I finish my Chinese novel!

Next Week's Plans

I should be able to finish 浪花一朵朵 2/My Mr. Mermaid 2. I may also read a bit more of the Yoshimoto Banana book.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 19: Sunday, May 25th, 2025

This was a big reading week for me! I had several DNFs, unfortunately, but I also read a few books that I loved.

I finished and adored 浪花一朵朵 2/My Mr. Mermaid 2. I'm sad that the story is over, but I had a lot of fun reading about this couple and their lives. In addition, while it didn't count for this challenge, I read some new manga in a series that I love.

In terms of other TBR books, I DNFed En el tiempo de las mariposas/In the Time of the Butterflies and the Yoshimoto Banana book. I just couldn't get into the former, and the latter contained some subject matter (view spoiler) that I hadn't been expecting and wasn't comfortable reading about.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to start なぜ働いていると本が読めなくなるのか (Why Do We Stop Reading When We Start Working?) today, and likely also 浅草ばけもの甘味祓い (Sweetly Exorcising Asakusa Monsters - this title sounds better in Japanese haha).

The former is nonfiction and something that I've heard excellent things about. The latter is a yōkai romance iirc, and was recommended to me by someone who loves the かくりよの宿飯 series that I also adore. I'm excited to get both of these books started! I think that they'll provide some much needed stress relief.

This was another successful reading week for me! I finished 浅草ばけもの甘味祓い/Sweetly Exorcising Asakusa Monsters, which was loads of fun. I look forward to seeing what happens in later volumes, which are available on Kindle Unlimited.

In other news, I unfortunately DNFed なぜ働いていると本が読めなくなるのか/Why Do We Stop Reading When We Start Working?. It felt redundant to me, since I was already familiar with most of the context that the author was pointing to when talking about the relationship between reading and working culture in Japan. It didn't feel like she was offering very main new insights or teaching me anything that I didn't already know.

In more positive news, I started わたしの幸せな結婚/My Happy Marriage yesterday and am loving it so far! It's a Cinderella story, but set in the Taisho period and with supernatural elements. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and as of 44%, I'm pleased to say that I can see why. The romance is very cute so far.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to finish わたしの幸せな結婚/My Happy Marriage, probably at some point today, since I only have ~150 pages to go. Otherwise, I might start ふつつかな悪女ではございますが/But I'm Just a Normal Villainess

I have an unfortunate update about わたしの幸せな結婚/My Happy Marriage: I DNFed 200 pages in since the plot was going nowhere, the characters had no personality, and the world building was nonexistent. A disappointment considering the hype and the pretty cover.

Next Week's Plans

I will be visiting my parents for a couple of weeks, which means gaining access to more of my TBR! I plan to read copious amounts of ノラガミ/Noragami, in addition to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation 3-5, A Bride’s Story 8, and Beyond the Outline 2-7.

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments Mount TBR Challenge Week 21: Sunday, June 15th, 2025

I read 10 TBR books this week!

Noragami /ノラガミ 4-11

This series is one of those cases where is starts off a bit slow and wonky, but once it hits its stride at volume 4, it only gets better and better. The characterization is so well done! The art and each individual story arc are also fantastic. While it does sexualize its female characters more than I would like, even that drops off quite a bit by volume 11, where I'm at now.

A Bride's Story 8 (+9)

I adore this series. I also read volume 9 this week, since I picked it up at a local bookstore. (Obviously, it wasn't a TBR book, haha.) At any rate, these two volumes have focused more on Pariya, with the lovely side effect of also giving a bit of attention to Amir and Karluk, since they live in the same village. Pariya is sweet and a bit awkward at expressing her feelings. It was cute to watch her get to know Umar a bit and make friends with the other girls in the village. She and Umar are very cute together!

화산귀환 1/Return of the Blossoming Blade 1

I've read this entire webtoon (up to its latest weekly chapter) in English, but it was my first time attempting to read it in Korean. My physical copy didn't seem to be the most well made (a page fell out, and several others were coming loose from the spine's glue, despite being bought new two years ago!), so that was sad and annoying to discover.

I enjoyed what I understood of the story itself, although the martial arts vocabulary involved some dictionary searches. I also own book 2, so I'll reread that in Korean as well soon. With that being said, it was more difficult that I expected overall.

Next Week's Plans

I plan to continue reading Noragami and read 화산귀환 2/Return of the Blossoming Blade 2 next week! I may also throw in one or two other books, but it remains to be seen what I'll be in the mood for. It feels good to have access to my entire TBR again, that's for sure!

Abi (booksa144) | 53 comments As of June 15th, 2025, I've completed Mt. Aratat, my goal for this year! I'm really proud of myself for reading at least one book every week and being consistent with my progress. I don't think I've ever been this dedicated to my TBR goals before, haha.

Since there's five and a half months left in the year and 40+ books left in my TBR, I'll be trying my hand at Mt. Kilimanjaro next! I've posted a new thread over there.
