This used to be a self-directed team challenge, which has now been retired. But since the work that was put into it was too good not to use anymore and there was so much detail to it, the mods have decided to offer this challenge up as an individual annual reading challenge instead.

How does this work?

◈ Using the spreadsheet below, you are provided with a selection of travel itineraries to take one or several around the world trips.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

◈ Trips will start in a random country/city and you will follow the globe in one direction the same as you would for a round the world fare. If you do not know the destinations, feel free to look them up for your own pleasure.

◈ Trips will consist of 8 stops across a maximum of 6 continents. At each stop, you will need to complete a task before moving on to the next stop in your trip.
(view spoiler)

◈ You can choose itineraries at random and do not have to follow them in order. So you could start with Travel Itinerary #5, then do Travel Itinerary #26 before hopping over to Travel Itinerary #1. It is entirely up to you, in which order you do the trips, or how many of them you complete.

◈ To track your progress, you can do so in this thread. Mods suggest reserving two spots when you sign up, just in case, as it all depends on your method of tracking. You can simply do it in your posts, or you could make a copy of the spreadsheet for yourself and fiddle around that way. Entirely up to you. Whatever works best for you.

◈ This is an annual challenge. It runs from 1st January to 31st December.

◈ Have fun!

5. Joensuu (FI) - Nadym (RU) Read a book where the ISBN10 number has exactly 2 odd numbers- Is there really so such thing. We are broken down here for awhile. Yippee!

So I asked because I don't believe this task is possible- Answer: No, there are no 10-digit ISBNs with exactly two odd digits. The ISBN-10 checksum algorithm, which ensures the number is valid, relies on the parity (evenness or oddness) of the digits in a specific way. For a 10-digit ISBN to be valid, the sum of the digits multiplied by their respective weights (from 10 to 1) must be divisible by 11. This requirement forces a specific relationship between the odd and even digits, making it impossible to have only two odd digits.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5924 comments I like the concept of this challenge but some of the tasks are (I feel) incredibly difficult. For example How do i search for a book where a character seeks world domination? Are there in fact any such books that are not Science Fiction or Fantasy?
There is a shelf for world domination but most of them seem to be non-fiction
Can anyone give me any ideas?

I'm also finding the tasks to be a little more difficult than expected.

For world domination, you might be able to read some historical fiction or history. Many kings and other leaders sought world domination. Napoleon. Ghengis Khan. Alexander the Great. There are many others. Or a biography/memoir of an inventor who wanted their creation or company to spread worldwide.

Beth | 637 comments How should we fulfill the tasks that have to do with reading a book someone else on your team (or another team) has read? Do we just pick something that someone else within this thread has posted they've read?

Thanks!
