The Fireman by Joe Hill
Each time I read a Joe Hill book, it just gets better and better. This one was no exception. I loved Harper, John Rookwood, Allie and her brother, Nick, Renee, and so many others who shared their journey. And what a journey it is. There are so many ups and downs; I was hooked from the very beginning. Which is saying a lot, considering it’s almost 800 pages long. Just when I thought the story was going to settle down, off it would go again.
I thought the pandemic infection was quite original and thought out. And there is more to the story than just a good sci-fi plot. There’s substance to it, as we read how different people react to their situation, whether as the infected or as one of those still clear of the disease. There are good people and bad people on both sides; it’s very much a tale of two worlds.
If you read the book, be sure to read the credits. The story isn’t complete without them.
Challenge Complete!
I read Golden Child by Claire Adam (also read for The Key Word challenge). I didn't know much about the book going in - but wow - it was definitely emotional! I had a moment where I had to set the book aside for a while before I could continue.

Adding another book - it must be the month of emotional reads for me - Stay with Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀. Loved this book - but it made my heart ache for the main character.

That last chapter? Insane! I don't remember ever feeling so dumbfounded after the last page has been turned. With this one, I just sat there, staring into space, asking myself what the hell just happened. Multiple POV shifts with other characters left me completely disoriented and I think that's exactly what the author intended to do, in order to make the impact of the cliffhanger that much harder.
I have absolutely no idea, but there's plenty of crazy theories being spun in the community and it's only making me so excited for the next book. I absolutely love the dragon voices and I adore Andarna, my heart breaking for her in that particular scene...

I'm glad you liked it - I have mixed feelings. I sort of felt like this was a "middle" book where nothing much happened and it was the same thing over and over again. I agree - love the Andarna story and am rooting for Xayden and Violet. But I was so excited, just a little let down.

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar

- Contemporary/Fantasy/LGBTQIA/Romance/YA
- Finished: February 20th
- 5 stars on Goodreads
Holy hell, I love this author SO DAMN MUCH. Her writing is whimsical and rambling, a veritable hurricane. You never know how any given sentence is going to end. Her writing hurts my heart in the best way possible. Like it’s being lifted right out of my chest.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

All of his writings are definitely rollercoasters. They give you all the feels. The first is about a carnival worker who is killed while saving a child from a ride that has malfunctioned. He dies and meets 5 people who teach him something about his life. They are people who have been part of his life and they all have a different lesson to teach him and help him see the bigger picture.
The second book is the sequel to the first. It's about the girl he saved. She's grown up and dies during her honeymoon in a hot air balloon accident. She goes to Heaven and meets 5 people as well. One of which is the man who saved her in the first book.
Mitch Albom is highly recommended if you need a good cry or want to feel all the feels and be emotionally drained afterwards.

I know he's not a popular pick, but I read Nicholas Sparks' book Every Breath. Sometimes I need a good cry--or at least some tears, as is the case here--and his books can sometimes work. Plus, I wasn't in the mood for a good WWII historical novel, which I'm sure would have fit the bill.
