Jordan H | 2 comments Happy New Year

My name is Jordan and I’m new to the group. I love historical fiction and my passion for it was brought on by my studies in college. It happens to be a genre you read a lot as a lit studies student at the school I attended and lucky for me I loved every book.

Looking forward to new recommendations, new penpals and fresh perspectives for 2025. Thanks!

Michael Murphy (mmurfy) | 2 comments I write mostly historical fiction. I've taken readers back to Woodstock with Goodbye Emily, to the bright lights and dark alleys of the 1930's with my Jake and Laura series and now to the untamed west in Sundown, which will be released later in the month. I hope you'll take a look at the Sundown video I posted on my profile. Wishing everyone a joyous new year,
Michael

My latest favourite in this genre is The Briar Code by Kate Quinn.

Pat Murphy (pat_murphy) | 3 comments Hello, Historical Fictionistas! Pat Murphy here. I'm an author. Most of my books are categorized as fantasy and/or science fiction, but my latest is historical fantasy. Right now, I'm reading my way through Ellis Peters' Cadfael books, an amazing historical mystery series set in the 12th century in England and focusing on a Welsh Benedictine monk, Cadfael, who aids the law by investigating and solving murders. The first book in the Ellis Peters series is: A Morbid Taste for Bones.

Nineteen books in the series and I'm on number 17. I'm worried about what I'm going to read next!

I will not be reading at the same pace but hoping to participate more often. I am an omnivore when it comes to genres. I will try just about anything once. Currently reading The Street by Ann Petry, Orlando by Virginia Woolf and Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas.

Pat I love the Owen Archer series so this series is going on my TBR. I just checked Amazon and you have a reprieve. They list 20 books in the series. Not sure if that is accurate, but fingers crossed.

Lynne Kennedy | 1 comments Hello Everyone, just new to Goodreads. Self published my first novel in March last year. Just finished reading Maggie O’Farrells, The Marriage Portrait which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Matt **The Renaissance Man** (goodreadscomabbas_child) | 3 comments Hello everyone! I just joined the group. I have always stubbornly refused to read fiction. However, having a love for history I have recently discovered that historical fiction is the niche for me and I have truly enjoyed it!

Jordan, if you are interested in historical fiction, you may want to try my novel. It is set in Petersburg, Virginia (1796-1826). It is a true story about my 3rd great-grandfather who was murdered in the town. The back cover sums it up! Just published on Amazon.

While I don't have a niche genre, historical fiction is indeed among my favourites.
Welcome to the group! Hope you find and offer many wonderful recs here. :)

message 16: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Wallace (stacyminsonwallacegmailcom) | 6 comments Hi! I'm Stacy, and I just published my first historical fiction about a murder set in Antebellum Petersburg, Virginia. I am now working on my second, about a couple from Switzerland who moved to France. He is a Swiss mercenary, hired by France, and his wife runs a coffee house, just prior to the French Revolution. Think spies, espionage. The great thing is that it's a true story about my 4th great-grandparents!

message 17: by Aimee (new)

Aimee | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Aimee and new to this group. I enjoy reading but stepped away for a while and am working on getting back into it with my favorite genre being Historical fiction, the truer and more accurate the better. I'm also a big fan of true crime, albeit mostly in the form of documentaries and docuseries, but trying in book form might be interesting. I'm also trying book annotating this year as well as a reading journal to keep me on track for a year goal. I'm currently reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

message 18: by Robin (new)

Robin Radlauer-Cramer | 1 comments Hello, I’m Robin. Historical fiction is my favorite genre. As a retired teacher, I’ve read historical fiction for YA, middle grade, and adult. A couple of my favorites are, Beyond the Western Sea Bks. I & II, by Avi, Six of One, by Rita Mae Brown, The Giver of Stars, by Jojo Moses, and Riding the Devil, by Robin Radlauer-Cramer, that’s me.
What are some of your favorite HF?

message 19: by Ursula (new)

Ursula Werner | 2 comments Hi everyone. I'm a writer and an avid reader of many genres, but historical fiction is my favorite. I've written two novels and two books of poetry - the second novel, Magda Revealed, is due to come out in April. Somehow, my book releases have coincided with the new arrival of Donald Trump to the White House, which has made historical comparisons kind of fascinating. My first book was about WWII Germany, and in 2017, when Trump was contemplating having the army march down Pennsylvania Avenue with its tanks, it felt scarily familiar. My new novel is about Mary Magdalene and her life, which also now offers interesting and sometimes horrifying contrasts to what's happening downtown (I live in Washington, DC).
I'd love to think that history can teach us things, but if nothing else, historical fiction is, in these times, a great escape.

message 20: by Janis W Rubin (new)

Janis W Rubin | 3 comments New to group. HF is my favorite genre. Enjoy beautiful, lyrical writings, as Shelley Read’s Go As a River. Enjoy reading from different countries: Lisa See, Abi Dare. Housed to read a lot of WW2; taking a break as do difficult. Happy to learn about what others are reading.

Julie Stratton (julieannestrattongoodreadscom) | 2 comments "Truth can be found in the pages of your Life" J.A .Stratton
Hello everyone! I'm so happy to have found this group. I'm an author of historical fiction and fiction. My themes are mainly based on women-centered spirituality and Goddess worship and witches. As a witch and priestess of the Divine Feminine, I was interested in writing about the witch burning times and bring to light about how "the witches wound" affects women's voices and how we have been silenced collectively around religion. I also love reading biographies & history as well. Looking forward to the author discussion group. My two novels were published by Ananke Press-an indie woman-black owned The Secret of Hunter Mountain (The Red Amaryllis Book 2) by Julie Stratton

message 23: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Grant (elsiegrant) | 13 comments Forgive me, I've been a member of this group since 2020 and never introduced myself! My name's Elizabeth, but please call me Elsie. I write historical fiction set in the early nineteenth century, and that is where my reading focus lies as well: Jane Austen, Mrs Radcliffe, Elizabeth Gaskell, Walter Scott, or books set in their period: Georgette Heyer, the Hornblower books, the Aubrey/Maturin series.

I'm an inveterate comfort reader and rarely start a new book, although I read quite a bit of non-fiction and biography. The Goodreads challenges always make me laugh, because all my life I've been trying to read less, not more! Apart from reading I enjoy music, knitting, cooking, and gardening – or rather, just being outside and listening to the birds sing and watching the plants grow . . . and I am deeply grateful for the great privilege of being able to indulge these tastes.

message 24: by Nancy (last edited Feb 15, 2025 01:01PM) (new)

Nancy (heronsky) | 2 comments Suzanne, The Midwife (Watertown Chronicles, #3) by Nancy Shattuck Nancy Shattuck I registered in this group many years ago but was too busy to follow up. Now, I want to remedy that. I have always loved reading historical fiction but never once imagined that I'd write it. Surprise! I discovered that my ancestors had lived through King Philip's War in 1675-76 and suddenly became obsessed with the period. I finished the third novel in the series, all written about characters who lived through this war, and am working on the 4th and 5th novels in the series now. You might want to check out the third book, Suzanne, The Midwife, which I think is the best one so far.

I am look forward to following through with my commitment to historical fiction and chatting with my fellow readers and writers.

Katy | 3 comments Hello everyone! My name is Katy and I’m fairly new to the group.

I picked up reading as a hobby in 2022 and fell madly in love with historical fiction. An amazing Lisa See novel called Shanghai Girls hooked me and now I have a hyper-fixation on Chinese Historical Fiction, but love anything in the genre. I also love speculative fiction, literary fiction and biographies.

P.D. Garrett | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I am P.D. Garrett. I’ve always been fascinated by the past—the forgotten stories, the resilience of those who came before us, and the way history shapes who we are. That’s why I write (and devour!) historical fiction. I can’t wait to chat with you all about favorite books, hidden gems, and the incredible worlds we step into through storytelling.

Looking forward to great discussions!

message 31: by Mary (new)

Mary | 1 comments Hi everyone I'm Mary and my love for historical fiction started when I was a teen, although not the only genre of books I thoroughly enjoy but it's one I come back to frequently. One of the books I'm currently reading is Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati. I joined this group recently because I saw that the April book club reading will be Babel by R.F. Kuang Babel and since that was one of my planned books for this year, I thought why not read it next month and join in the discussions? Besides historical fiction, I also enjoy classic fiction, mythology, gothic/horror, and - from time to time, science fiction.

Excited to engage with you all and I'm always open to making new friendly connections that share common interests!

message 32: by Lara (new)

Lara Hello everyone, I'm Lara and I've only recently discovered my love for historical fiction even though I've always had a huge interest in history! The last book I read was 'What the River Knows' and I really enjoyed reading it.
Excited to engage with you all, feel free to message me!

Jerilyn | 1 comments Hi everyone, I’m Jerilyn, a retired librarian who still reads widely and often. My personal favorite has always been historical fiction with multifaceted characters, finely wrought settings and a bit of wisdom thrown in. I look forward to experiencing books like these with all of you.

message 36: by Linda (new)

Linda Wilgus | 7 comments Hi everyone! My name is Linda and while I read most genres, historical fiction has been my favourite since I was a kid. I love both the escapism of it as well as how it often sheds a light on our situation today, and besides enjoying the wonderful storylines and characters, I tend to learn something new with each book I read. These days I'm a writer too, not hard to guess my genre! I've been on Goodreads for a few years but mainly just kept track of what I was reading. Really happy to link up with other historical fiction fans and chat about our favourite books!

message 37: by Veanne (new)

Veanne | 6 comments Hi Everyone, my name is Eszter and I like all sorts of genres, among others historical fiction too :)

Katie Churchill-King | 1 comments Hello everyone, my sister recommended I join this group, to post my first historical fiction novella which just released. If I can reach the 25 posts, I will do so. I am listening to The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon at the moment for my book club, and otherwise work through 18th century “papers” of Hudson Bay Company employees for research. My favorite historical non-fiction reads as of late are A Journey by Samuel Hearne and The Company by Stephen Bown. My favorite book in the last year was There, There by Tommy Orange. Very nice to see this community of dedicated readers.

Kirsty (kirsty_tothill) | 2 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Kirsty and have just got back into reading again after a break for 28 years raising my 5 children. I'm quite a slow reader so it takes me a while to get through a book - but over the past couple of years I have read my way through all the Ken Follett Kingsbridge series and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am now about half way through Game of Thrones and am hooked - to the point of ordering the rest of the books. I prefer reading an actual book but I do have a kindle and quite often switch to that to read something a bit lighter every now and then... having several different books on the go at once doesn't bother me too much but at the moment I don't want to read anything other than GOT!
I lost my husband 3 years ago and now my children are all grown, the youngest being 17, I am finding I have more time, or maybe the mental space, to read again.

message 46: by J.U. (new)

J.U. Scribe (juscribe) | 8 comments Hi, I’m Joe—a writer and blogger based in Wisconsin with deep family roots in Nigeria. My storytelling journey began in elementary school, when I penned my first book for a class project on bullying. That early spark ignited a lifelong passion for writing.

Today, I’m the author of a historical fiction series that follows the coming-of-age journey of a young prince on a fictional island during the Ancient Roman era. The series blends rich historical detail with emotional depth, exploring themes of identity, friendship, and resilience.

Though I’ve been more of a quiet observer in this group, I’m eager to connect with fellow readers and writers who appreciate heartfelt, character-driven stories, especially those set against the backdrop of history aimed at young adults.

I am a strong supporter of fellow veterans and those who are currently serving our country in the Armed Forces. My goal with my writing is to give readers a glimpse at what members of the Armed Forces go through when they deploy to a foreign land in a time of war. One of my favorite quotes from my first book "Of Vital Interest" is "hope is not a method'.

Jacklyn Lo (jacklyn_a_lo) | 3 comments Hello Historical Fictionistas!

I’m Jacklyn A. Lo, thrilled to join this wonderful group of history lovers. I have a deep passion for history and how it shapes us — especially when combined with metaphysical and spiritual themes. My two recent novels reflect this blend:

Redemption — a time-travel novel that journeys through ancient periods on Earth, exploring karma, free will, and past lives.

Hamlet’s Last Choice — a spiritual reimagining of Shakespeare’s tragedy, set in historical times, where destiny and personal choice collide.

I look forward to connecting with fellow readers and authors, sharing book recommendations, and discussing how history and spirituality can intertwine in storytelling.

Thank you for having me!

Jacklyn A. Lo
