I'll be interested in what you think of it, Katrisa. I have it on my wish list, but I need to read the other two first.

The whole series is a solid 4 stars for me. This book covers the aftermath of the Trojan War - similar to Elektra though I like this one better because I think Elektra (the character) was a bit too annoying. I really like Cassandra and Clytemnestra in this one.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I'm looking forward to the series. I didn't care for Elektra that much and need a bit of a break from Greek mythology.

I have been meaning to read one of her for a while now. She seem to be liked by many.

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I cannot suspend my hold for for french ebooks, So i got 2 on the same day.

I am going from piracy (L'écume des lames) to WWII in Finland (Les Guerriers de l'hiver) reading about Simo Häyhä, the "White Death".

I also started Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon which got me googling and reading about Yoruba mythology. I am totally out of my zone there.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I started Wise Blood yesterday and realized it would work for the "religion" task of the Listmania challenge. I was planning to read something else for that task, but this was a welcomed surprise.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I am still listening to Project Hail Mary and I did start the print book The Shadow of What Was Lost the other night but my brain wasn't able to concentrate so I'll start again with fresh eyes tomorrow.

I've decided that first come, first served. I'm not going to hold a task for an intended book. While I had two possibilities for the religion task, I discovered this month's themed read will fit. Since I don't have it slated elsewhere in the challenge, I've put it in for the religion task.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I'm doing the same, Janice. It is fun to gopher but sometimes you just happen to read something that fits. All legit! :)

message 18: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield | 903 comments I’m reading a book called A Murder in the Neighborhood by Spencer Guerrero

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I started Lolita yesterday. Disturbing already and I'm only 10% into it. It is incredibly well written, though.

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I have not finished a book yet this year. I'm hoping to finish The House of Eve today.

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I finished The Fox Wife and Bitter Passage. I found them to be disappointing reads for different reason.

I've decided the author of The Fox Wife isn't for me. I've read another of her books and felt the same way. If I had realized she was the same author, I wouldn't have picked up The Fox Wife.

Bitter Passage was so slow paced and repeatedly focused on the bleak landscape and it's unrelenting hardships - snow, ice, freezing temps, hunger. Etc.

I've started two books: Somewhere Beyond the Sea (Book 2 of the The House in the Cerulean Sea) and A Play of Isaac.

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield | 903 comments I’m reading a book called Last Patient of the Night by Gary Gerlacher

message 23: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I gave up on A Play of Isaac, couldn't get past the first chapter.

My hold for Dark Witch finally came available so I thought I'd better give it priority. It's only been on hold since April 2024. I've managed to fit it into the theme of villainy.

Kristie | 19133 comments I finally finished my first book of the year, The House of Eve. It was really good and not responsible for my lack of reading. I feel like I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

I'm ready for a change of pace and am starting an early copy of A Killing Cold. I've read two other books by Kate Alice Marshall and really enjoyed them, so I'm looking forward to this one. I've only read the prologue and the first chapter so far and they pull you in quickly.

You've started the year off with some real doozies, Janice. I hope Somewhere Beyond the Sea and Dark Witch are better for you.

My hold for Somewhere Beyond the Sea came in today and I sent it back for a later date. I haven't been making a lot of reading progress and already had to get back on the waitlist once for that one after taking it out and not having time to read it. I hope to get to it soon though. I'll be interested to see what you think of it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I finished Magic Marks the Spot and Dark Witch yesterday so I'm starting all new books today.

- The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder is a buddy read, on audiobook.
- Three Wild Dogs (and the Truth): A Memoir is a new release.

Both books will fit my list challenge.

Kristie | 19133 comments I finished The Lost House The Lost House by Melissa Larsen . I love the idea of the story, but the writing didn't work for me.

message 34: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I finished A Killing Cold A Killing Cold by Kate Alice Marshall a couple days ago. It was a fast-paced read and kept me guessing.

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I'm currently reading The Naturalist Society on kindle and will start The Reading List tomorrow on audiobook.

message 40: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I finished Penitence. It was a very realistic fiction. I now have to write the review for this one. as well, but I don't know what I want to say about it at all. Maybe tomorrow I'll get around to writing a couple of reviews.

I started The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. Hoping I can read it quickly for the monthly challenge. Three days for one book is doable as long as it's engaging and life doesn't get too crazy. So far, it's interesting so fingers crossed I'm done on time.

message 41: by Janice, Moderator (new)

message 43: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 131 comments Currently reading Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and intermittently reading Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, which is somewhat ironic given the premise of the book ;)

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 31, 2025 06:09AM) (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments Here are the reviews for the two books I recently finished:

Penitence by Kristin Koval - my Penitence review
Head Cases (PAR Unit, #1) by John McMahon - my Head Cases review

I noticed I have a few books on my review-to-follow shelf. I seem to throw them over there if I finish when I'm too busy to do a review, then forget about them. I'm going to have to clear out that shelf as best as I can soon.

I hope to finish The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell today.

message 46: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield | 903 comments I’m reading a book called The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea

message 47: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I bailed on The Naturalist Society. I don't think they needed a magic system. The theme of gender equality was strong enough without it.

I'm starting Broken Bayou tonight.

message 48: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I keep forgetting to update here. I finished The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell a couple of days ago and started The Time Keeper. It's a quick read and I'm almost done. It reminds me of A Christmas Carol in some ways. I should finish tomorrow and I'm not sure what I'm going to start next. I have a few books from the library right now, so it'll likely be one of those.
