Sevda Mammadova | 21 comments I found a pattern recently that plays a key role in determining whether or not I enjoyed a book.
Apparently, whenever I find my 6 star series or absolutemost favorite book of all time, it's almost always written in first person.
However, when I read a very high rated and critically acclaimed book that just so happens to be written in the thrid person, I enjoy it much less.
It's not even something I tend to think about while reading; the experience is just somehow worse in my opinion.
Is it the same for everyone or is it just me?

Kara McArrie (karazynsolo) | 27 comments I’ve never had a strong preference for one narrative perspective over another. I remember reading a book with a chapter written in second person, told from “the fly on the wall’s” POV. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it—it’s actually one of my favorite novels now. For me, as long as the perspective isn’t redundant or disruptive to the story’s flow, I’m open to it.

That said, I’ve noticed many people have strong opinions about first-person versus third-person narration. Personally, I think it depends on the genre and the story being told. A contemporary romance written from the first-person POV of both the FMC and MMC can feel natural and intimate, while a complex sci-fi told entirely in first person might feel overwhelming or limiting.

Ultimately, I’ve never put a book down just because of its POV. In my opinion, if the story is engaging, the perspective becomes part of the experience rather than a barrier.

Salma | 1 comments I don't mind either, really. I can enjoy both as long as I find the story interesting and catchy.
However I do tend to slightly prefer the first person, since I can actually feel as if i'm the one living whatever the character is going through.
I also understand that the third person is slightly better when world building requires deep descriptions.
Either way, if I can enjoy the book I dont mind.

Clara 𐙚 (clara17) | 54 comments Definitely first person!

Ella✨(booktrovert) | 152 comments I like both, but tend to enjoy first person more. it doesn't really affect how I feel about the book but most of my faves are first person.

Rose | 29 comments First person makes it better unless the narrator in third person is great or funny

Cassie (weekend hiatus) | 89 comments First person all the way. Feels more personal. Plus you can imagine yourself in the mc's situation more easily.

Jada (semi study hiatus) Third, but First Person is growing on me.

message 9: by Rita (new)

Rita Chapman | 7 comments I have a mixture in my books - I think it depends on the story.

Mae (inactive due to school) | 12 comments first person. it’s easier to read imo and it’s easier to connect with the story

✧˖°. chloe ✧˖°. | 3 comments I think first person because it makes me feel like I'm actually in the story

message 12: by M. J. (new)

M. J. Pfiffner | 5 comments I enjoy first person more than third person because it allows me to fully step into the character’s mind, experiencing their thoughts, emotions, and perceptions firsthand. It creates a stronger sense of intimacy, making the story feel more personal and immersive.

message 13: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Przytula | 7 comments I agree with MJ^! I feel like first person really gives you depth into the character and makes you feel as if you are them. Yet I also like a third person perspective if there is more to the story than just the first person perspective (has to have good world building)!!

✮ ⋆ ˚。 ᗩᑌᗷᖇIE ⋆。°✩ | 51 comments I don’t mind third, but I prefer first

。°✩ Rasha 。°✩ {Free Palestine} | 12 comments I like first-person books when its a thriller or a book that really focuses on the person's mind (?) but I also do love when books are in third person because it allows us to know more about the surroundings and all

Noel ◇JUJUTSU. KAISEN. IS. COMING. BACK.◇ (noel4444) | 34 comments I prefer first person POV, or if multiple character POV is available then that, it's nice to read the Character talking to you, or directly reading the Characters POV its cool.

message 17: by lovelauren (new)

lovelauren | 3 comments 1st person 100%. I like feeling like a am the character and I know what they're feeling.

message 18: by Yoyo (new)

Yoyo | 11 comments first person 100% I do not like 3rd person at all I like seeing what their thoughts are and their pov

message 19: by ♬♩Harper (new)

♬♩Harper | 2 comments First person. Third persons annoying because you don’t know what the main characters are actually thinking, just what they’re doing.

Laylah Marie, Darling (laylah_marie) | 18 comments First for me bc I prefer to know the characters thoughts first hand

message 21: by Fyala (new)

Fyala | 6 comments I really don‘t mind, I think it‘s generally more important how the characters are portrayed (emotions, personality etc.) But I love well written free direct speech in third person narrated works. When I’m writing though, I tend to choose a first person narrator, because I usually try to convey specific feelings of myself with my projects.

message 22: by Gary (new)

Gary Feinstein | 10 comments As a writer I used third person limited for my first novel, and there's definitely a way to make it voicey, and almost like first person. You can include the main characters thoughts and actions, and if your dialog is good it can show the reader what that character is thinking. But I do understand what everyone is saying about first person, especially for YA. Anyway, I like both, as long as the story is good. And for my next novel I'll be writing in first person, just for the hell of it.

message 23: by TotallyNotAmi (new)

TotallyNotAmi | 5 comments Both and neither

message 24: by Benji (new)

Benji | 36 comments First person puts you in the characters shoes. Feeling their thoughts, emotions breaking through. Their fears, the give aways,
Words they wished they said...

I like that the understanding of their mind, & creative outburst.

As for third person, it makes you feel like a ghost haunting the world they live in. Watching, hearing, scanning. Yet never truly able to express a word of emotion. Picking up on cues of body language left by the author. (Similar to people watching at the park.)

Depends on the author & how they carve their words into script!
I like both.
