They seemed to focus on a lot of old Chinese myths—I saw somewhere that it was a reimagined telling—but I loved how it delved into Chinese culture and stories. It reminded me of Mulan and another show I watched, W.I.T.C.H., which also had a storyline about 'The Four.'
I really enjoyed the backstory. The world was fantastic, and although this was a very long book, I never got bored. Fantasy books have more scope to develop their world-building and can get with being longer, but I still appreciate it when it doesn't feel too lengthy, instead drawing me in and making the world more imaginableWhile I felt that some of the fight scenes were a bit rushed and could have used more detail, I didn't mind too much because all the other scenes were very. Similarly, this had less romance than I'm used to, but it served as a nice secondary plot, and I liked that it wasn't solely on that. However, the love triangle situation had me going back and forth about who I was rooting for and the decisions that were made!
The FMC had a good story arc, too. Initially, we see them as talented but relatively sheltered and unaware of their true strengths. We gradually witness her transformation into becoming more open in certain aspects and branching out without becoming overly cocky. I was eagerly looking forward to the second part of duet, as I believe it could have worked as a standalone with the way it ended. However, I would like to know more about certain issues that occurred.

I read it last year and it really wasn't for me. The pacing was really hard to follow and I felt dragged around by the plot. It had no time to breathe there was always some kind of action going on. As a result the moments that were supposed to have a big impact fell flat.
As for the characters, their personalities could be described in one word or phrase easily and they had no distinctness to them. Sometimes I forgot who was talking because it's practically impossible to tell the two male leads apart. Outside of our three main characters i feel like there aren't any more important characters which gives it a little wattad-esque feeling.
I wasn't bored by the plot but I was tired. The love triangle was also absolutely ridiculous. There was only ever one choice from the beginning. A man who doesn't choose you doesn't deserve to be even considered.
Sometimes even the author forgets where we are. My girl is almost dying in one scene and in the next she's running through a forest walking home? She almost loses her limbs in one scene and in the next she's perfectly fine.
All the conversations the main characters have is like exchanging information
Disliked it, waste of my time. I read spoilers for book 2 and it sounds even worse so I will not continue this series.
