Denise (drams5) | 323 comments How is everyone managing to keep to with discussions with these new notification changes? I'm wondering if there's a workaround I'm missing. Ever since GR made the change to stop sending automated email notifications, I don't get any at all (or VERY few). I've tried checking the "notify me when people comment" button multiple times. I'm hearing that others are also having issues, so I don't think it's just me, but I'm missing lots of discussion and that's the best part of GR. Any tips for keeping up? Do we think they'll ever fix it?

Denise (drams5) | 323 comments P.S. I'll try to remember to keep coming back to see if anyone comments. Because...no notifications. 🫤

I think by going to your profile and specifying what discussions, groups, etc. you prefer to follow; is probably the only workaround.

Mine are working pretty good, but I always check the discussions I tend to follow and whenever I see the number 3 or above on recent posts; I just automatically click. Of course, this doesn't help for the more obscure threads I follow, but its something. Ugh.

Goodreads drives me nuts

Seriously?! I'm glad to hear that worked for you. I've done that. Maybe eventually my help desk question will get answered and it will work better. This gives me hope. I thought it was this way for everyone.

I think the only notifications I have gotten in 2025 are if someone likes my review. But if it's not this way for everyone, maybe there's hope!

Or maybe I should try doing this from different devices? I'll try that. It can't hurt. Thanks, Alondra.

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments Here’s what a friend recently told me about this issue. It worked for her but I havent tried it yet.

“In one of my GR groups someone said they started getting notifications again, at the bell, after they signed out of GR on all devices and trashed cookies for GR and some say it updated their "last active on GR" to this month.”

She said you have to sign out on phone, tablet, PC, every device that’s logged in to GR, trash all GR cookies (on all devices) and then log back in. This worked for her so hopefully it’ll work for you too!

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments PS Here’s what she told me about deleting GR cookies - I hope this helps! Unfortunately, I can’t answer any further questions about it bc I haven’t taken the time to do it yet.

“You have to make sure you're signed out of everything when you trash the GR cookies. On my iphone I go to settings and to the browser I use and to see all data and then type in Goodreads and delete what shows up.

On my computer I go to preferences in the browser I use and then to manage data and type in goodreads there and delete what shows up.”

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments I check the box under discussions but I haven’t been getting any notifications for them for at least a week, and probably more. Not sure why this issue is affecting some of us but not everyone.

Thank you for this! I will try it this afternoon. Also, I'm sorry you are also having issues, but I'm glad it's not just me...and not everyone. Maybe we can figure it out.

I always try to click on the boxes 'Notify me when people comment' and 'Add to my update feed' It seems to help. But I also regularly check the main feeds, the challenges, that sort of thing.

I also use a desktop computer, because APPs are always glitchy.

One thing that has always been hinky, are my reviews. No matter what I click; the notifications are inconsistent, at best.

Joann M (owlreviewbooks) | 70 comments I don't get any notification only on my homepage (bell). When I visit GR I just go to each group, and it's says new comments and I go from there

Yes, I have done that. I still get nothing. Not even the little bell notification.

Same here - marking the checkbox to notify me hasn't been helping w/this recent glitch.

I sure hope that trick helps you all (and me) as it did my friend. If I ever take the time to just do it, I bet it will help. I'll let you know if I ever do, and if it works haha!

message 15: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 323 comments Thanks for all the assistance here! I have an update. I deleted cookies, logged out of Goodreads, restarted all devices and then logged back in. It definitely did something. My notifications aren't back to the way they were, but I am receiving some again. I am active in several groups, so to go several days with NO notifications felt very off. I think this was progress.

Thanks again for the tips, everyone!

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments Thanks for letting us know, Denise. I was wondering about this.

Maybe the order matters? I feel like she logged out on all devices first and then searched for the GR cookies and deleted them before logging back in.

Idk if that’ll make a difference but I’m curious.

message 17: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments She added more info later so I’m adding it here. I still need to take the time to do this bc hopefully it’ll work.

Has this worked for anyone yet?

“It's key that you are signed out from every device you use for GR and then delete the GRc cookies/history and only then sign back in. “

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments OK, I just signed out from all devices, deleted GR cookies, and signed back in.

Waiting for a notification to see if it worked lol! It did change my profile from last active in November to last active this month. I hope it fixed the issue.

ETA: As far as I know, I'm getting them all now. Fingers crossed!!

I'll try the data thing. There's a known bug that they're allegedly working on: in the profile where it allows you to specify notifications on your groups it persists in saying I'm not a member of any.

I am not getting my notifications either. I have checked all of those boxes too. Ugh

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 9 comments I seem to be getting all of mine now so at least the fix above seems to work. 🤞🏼
