Community Favorites Challenge - Essential Reader Achievement question
Jennifer Cicchetto Jennifer Feb 02, 2025 08:59PM
I don't know who is running the Community Favorites challenge. However, I was wondering if the qualifying books, for the essential books from black authors' achievement, could be expanded to include some older books?
I think this would make the challenge more fair to people in all income brackets.
Including only newer books, limits the number of people who may participate in the challenge.
In my case, I have processing delays, so I don't often feel comfortable checking books out of the library because I cannot always finish them before they are due to be returned. I know I could check them out a 2nd time, but I live in a rural area without public transportation. I have unreliable transportation myself, so I would prefer to visit the library only 1x/month. I also don't have it in my budget to purchase an e-reader, or to afford new book prices this year. I currently get my books from thrift stores, used bookstores, little free libraries...etc.
I have been trying to read at least one book for Black History Month, one for Women's History Month, and one book for Indigenous Peoples Day each year for a few years now. So, this Summer I planned-ahead and acquired some $1-$2 titles from a local library fundraiser bargain book sale. I selected the following 4 as possibilities for Black History Month. Would it be possible to add 1 or all 4 of the following titles to the list of qualifying reads?
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson
Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Thank you in advance for any/all assistance with this matter.

You should contact the Goodreads team directly. I don't think they'll be reading this post here.
