Emil | 255 comments Hello there,

I have a general question regarding group notifications. At the beginning of 2024, I stopped receiving notifications for comments on this group, which caused me to miss some interesting reads last year.

About two months ago, I started receiving them again, and everything worked well until January 24, 2025. Since then, I haven't received any new notifications from this group.

The notifications were always turned on for this group; in fact, I have never changed the settings. This applies to all devices, whether mobile or desktop.

I do receive all other notifications except for those from this group. I thought I could ask around to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue and if there is a fix for it. If not, I will ask on the general help page.

Thank you!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 2306 comments Emil, I know there's been an issue with notifications. I think Goodreads has stopped sending them. People in other groups I'm in are also complaining they no longer receive them. This has been going on for some time. I'm surprised you are still receiving them in other groups. I don't know if there is a fix for this. I'm sorry that I can't be more help.

Maybe someone else here has a suggestion to get around this issue.

Emil | 255 comments Thank you for your reply, Tamara. It's good to know that this is a general Goodreads issue. I hope it gets fixed soon, as it's an important functionality, especially for forgetful people like myself.

Interestingly, I received the notification for your reply and the latest one for the topic "Seneca - Selected Letters to Lucilius." However, the notifications for the Gilgamesh read are still missing.

Please feel free to remove my post if it's irrelevant for the group.

It's weird you get notifications on some things and not on others. I couldn't even begin to explain it.

BTW, I have posted translations, reading schedule, background, and glossary for Gilgamesh. Discussion of Tablets I & II begins on the 12th. I hope you still plan to join us--in spite of the erratic situation with notifications.

Chris | 478 comments I seem to never get any notifications about interim readings, specifically when chosen and reading start dates. I can find them on the group site after they have started, which is often too late for me to try to get a copy of whatever the read is. I don't do any e-reading of anything beyond an article length.

David | 3251 comments Hi Chris,

1. Interim reads are always posted and start the day after a major read ends. Unlike major reads, email notifications are not sent for interim reads.

2. Interim reads should always appear on the home page the same day they start.

3. Interim reads are shorter reads that will always be freely available on the internet; the moderator will post one or more, free links where the interim reads may be accessed.

4. Because of the quick nature of interim reads there are no advanced notifications for interim reads, its only fair we provide free links for everyone.

5. Sometimes the moderators have not decided on the interim read until a day or two before it is supposed to start. 😊

Thanks David for explaining the process. I've meant to ask about notifications for interim reads for years Better late than never, I guess. As I posted, I don't read anything longer than a short article online. Look forward to participating again with the next read.

David | 3251 comments thanks for the feedback Chris, and my apologies for not fully addressing your concerns.

1. Interim read notifications - see above, they are posted the day they start and meant to be accessed for free on the internet.

2. The work in question is, "usually" also available in a hard copy. Your best bet is searching for it on goodreads and then finding sellers there.

3. I realize 2 is not much of a consolation for missing out on the work while it is going on. But like all of our discussions, we do not close them, and we encourage posts to them at any time, even after the group has read them. They should show up as unread posts to everyone, and the moderators especially watch for those and reply.

You might be a little late to the party, but the party never ends and we are happy to keep the conversation going.
