message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I'll be organizer to Marnie's scorekeeping. Will that work?

I'll update message 1 with a list of what needs to be done. I'll plug in people as they posted, starting with Lynn. Sort of first come first served.

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments Check out message one. I've plugged everyone's books as stated. Please check the list over and let me know where I've goofed. I did it down and dirty, so there are liable to be mistakes.

I think it's good that we continue to list everywhere our books will fit. From here on, state your preference and then list alternatives so that Marnie can fill shuffle things along.

Marnie, please let me know what you're moving and to where so that I can keep the list up to date.

Now... for my own.

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments How is everyone doing? This thread has been quiet for 3 days! Is everyone ready to go? I already have my books set aside waiting for toppler time. :)

Too bad I didn't plan the toppler for this week. It's been so quiet here. Some of my plans were cancelled due to snow and I've been sitting at home reading more than usual. I hope I can keep up the trend next week. It's been really nice.

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I think everyone was keen to gopher so got it done right of the bat.

message 19: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 997 comments I am just finishing my current reads to be mostly done for rest before the Toppler!

Can I also claim?

The Naga Warriors 1: Battle of Gokul Vol 1
Publ Month: 5

message 20: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments Added!

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I think so too, Janice. I was just checking in. :)

If I am able to read as much next week as this week, I may be able to add an extra audiobook. :) We'll see how the beginning of the week goes though. I seem to be adding a lot of appointments.

message 22: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments Ive had a few appointments these last two weeks, but everything is clear for the toppler.

message 23: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments Sometimes having appointments can be a good thing during a toppler. I listen to an audiobook while driving and can read if I have to wait. It actually prevents me from doing other things that don't allow me to read.

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I used to listen to my audibooks in the car while driving, but I've gotten away from it mainly because of my strokes. I need to concentrate on what I'm doing is the main consideration. Plus, I don't do a lot of highway driving anymore and driving around town is just short bursts . The final excuse is, I'm still getting used to my new car.

I have Apple Car Play with it, and the audiobooks weren't accessing my Audible library,When I first tested it out, the only book it offered was Bad Monkey, something we read as a group years back. I didn't even know I owned the audiobook. I finally found it in my ITunes library and I deleted it. TCar Play was accessing Itunes by default. With the help of ChatGPT I finally got it to link to my Audible library. Now, I'm procrastinating about using it.

Maybe I'll go for a drive this weekend, and listen to my toppler reads. It's above freezing, and I just hope the sun comes up and I can enjoy my sun roof now that the snow has melted off of it.

message 25: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments That's understandable, Janice. I definitely focus on the road more than my books, but if I needed to focus additional attention I would shut it off too. As it is now, if I'm going somewhere and don't know the area I will often turn my book off so I can pay more attention to where I'm going.

One of the nice things about audiobooks for me is that sometimes during a toppler my husband and I will take a long drive just for the sake of driving and listening. We once drove over two hours to try out an ice cream shop just so I would have good book time. We've done the same thing to a coffee shop and to take a walk on the beach. It ends up being some nice time together during the toppler.

Marnie (marnie19) | 3258 comments Snow and Topplers seem like good companions. I’m in Florida with no weather to keep me reading. It’s been crazy busy and I’m looking forward to the toppler to refocus on reading.

I’m going to start with Beartooth and The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year (audio)

Reporting thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I'm going to download my audiobooks this afternoon so that I have no delays tomorrow.

That is so cool, Kristie. Does your husband like the same books you do?

message 28: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments Marnie - I'll be really interested to see what you think of Beartooth. I keep going back and forth with that one on my TBR.

Fortunately, we like a lot of the same of books. We both tend to like historical fiction, mystery-thrillers, and contemporaries. There are certain authors that we both love. He knows that I have challenges and book clubs to read for, so he always lets me pick the book and I always try to pick something we will both enjoy.

message 29: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1295 comments I am all ready and set to go. The temperatures are below freezing, but snow is not forecast here. I'll be reading indoors in cozy nooks and cafes this week.

Marnie (marnie19) | 3258 comments Kindle is fully charged and ready. I actually charged it out in the living room because I oftentimes wake up in the middle of the night and read a bit ;)

I’m curious about Beartooth too Kristie. Hope it’s not overhyped. I’ll let you know later. It’s very short so a good first book.

message 31: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments Ready and raring to go. :) I had a moment last night trying to find The Devil's Novice on my kindle app. Got to keep those programmers working so they keep updating apps/websites when they don't need to. The way your library is listed is different. I thought maybe I was mistaken about owning it, but I found it and downloaded it. Phew!

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments Oh that's funny, Marnie. Good idea to keep it out of the room.

Janice, I got a newer Kindle a year or so ago and I hate the way they are set up now. It is so difficult to find anything. My old Kindle just had my Kindle library in it and I loved it. I wish they didn't add so much junk to them. For me, my Kindle is meant to be a book. If I wanted access to everything else I'd get something else.

My physical book for this toppler is a paperback. It's been sitting next to my bed for a while now and I'm happy to finally get to it.

message 33: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Feb 22, 2025 08:39AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments It's getting to be a pet peeve of mine. It's not just Kindle, it's everything. Every website is constantly making changes. I just get used to a new layout, and bang it's all shuffled around. I hate the the new book page on Audible.

The government webpage has all been changed around, and without making any kind of an announcement, they now require specific things when filing T4 slips. I don't know what you call them in the States, but they are a report of earnings and deductions for each employee and they need them to file their income tax. I noticed a new box on the filing summary that I needed to check and fill out because I was filing on behalf of my client. When I uploaded the file, it was rejected because my ID on the summary didn't match the ID I used to log into the site. Talk about pulling hair. So frustrating.

I've finally come to the conclusion all these changes are make work projects for hired programmers. They take something that doesn't need fixing and mess it up so it now becomes something that needs fixing just to give them something to do.

message 34: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments So frustrating!

message 35: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I actually have a hard time finding my books in my Kindle now. There is so much junk on there.

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments Good luck everyone!

message 37: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments How's everyone doing? I'm about 1/2 way through my first book. I'm just taking a break for some lunch.

message 38: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3258 comments I finished Beartooth

I’m not sure how to rate it. I was expecting Where the Crawdads Sing ish but this wasn’t that. It was sad and extremely atmospheric ( I could smell the words lol) I found it more depressing than inspirational.

message 39: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments Oh boy... I'm not sure what to do with that. lol

I read 1/3 of my first book. I had one of my migraines starting, so I shut my eyes for a bit and I'm feeling better now. I'm going to grab some dinner and get back at it.

message 40: by Marnie (last edited Feb 22, 2025 02:23PM) (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3258 comments I know. I’m sorry. I’m going to put more in a spoiler and you can decide if you want to know. I hope your migraine eases. They sound so debilitating.

I would suggest skipping (view spoiler)

message 41: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1295 comments I know what you mean about Kindle and Amazon. I got rid of the Amazon account and Kindle app completely from all of my devices. I live a stressfree time now because of it. I started to buy more physical books. I do use a reading app sometimes, and I found one called Kobo. It is better than Kindle, that's for sure, but it's also not that hard.

message 42: by Nistha (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59875 comments I finished my first book, A Fall of Marigolds and now my vision is a little blurry.

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19133 comments I'll probably skip it, Marnie. I feel like I won't be in the mind space for a book like that for a very long time.

I stopped at 33% in Ward D today, but started Eddie Winston is Looking for Love tonight. I won't get too far, but I'm still on track for where I expected to be and I think it's going to be a good read. Totally different than Ward D, which is good.

I'm going to read a little bit more and get to be a little early. I'm hoping a good night of sleep will help me to feel better in the morning.

message 46: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments I'm in the middle of The Wickwire Witch and should be able to report finishing tomorrow

Can you add another book to the list for me please. I had planned / hoped to have reread The Calculating Stars by the time we started the toppler. Alas, that did not happen lol
(and I need to get to it before The Fated Sky, which is already on my list)
