In the 1950s the Hugo Award was just born, so rules were in flux, and there were no short story awards in two years, only winners are known in two cases. However, there was a lot of good stuff, so for those who is interested, here is a link to suggestions of the strongest (according to the author) pieces for each category including short stories for the 1950s:

I have an interesting anthology of '50s stories: The End of Summer: Science Fiction of the Fifties. Includes an Introduction and Afterwords to the stories, by the editors.

I also have a copy of the July 1956 Astounding, which I picked up a few years ago on a whim. (I was born in that month.) I see Horton mentions a story from that issue, "Tomb Tapper" by James Blish, as a possible 1957 Hugo nominee. It's a while since I read it but as I recall I didn't like the story that much.
