SarahKat | 6223 comments This thread is to discuss The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

Pages: 496 pages

Length: 1 month (March)

Participants: LinaVer, Beth, Jana, Sydney

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Here are some questions to help get the conversation started! Feel free to look up discussion questions specific to this book or come up with your own. Just make sure any questions that contain spoilers are under spoiler tags.
Discussion questions are not required but may be a fun way to talk about the book and get to know each other!

Prior to starting:
What prompted you to join this buddy read?
Have you read this author before? What do you think of their other books?

Mid-read:
What character or ideas do you relate to the most and why?
Do you have any favorite quotes or scenes?

After reading:
What was enjoyable or not-so-enjoyable about this book?
Did this book change your perception about anything, either within the book (character development) or in real life?

Thank you, Sarah!

LinaVer | 447 comments I'm slightly behind with my March reads, but I finally started it. Beautiful prose, but it is quite descriptive at the begining and reads a bit slow, so that is how I am going to read it throughout this month: bit by bit, mixing it up with other books.

LinaVer | 447 comments I’m now in chapter 11, I think. It’s slow going but I’ve switched to listening to an audiobook instead of reading it, and it helps me engage with it more, so we’re moving forward steadily. And (view spoiler) I find it kind of difficult to engage with and understand some of the slang and time/culture/circumstances of the time that the book is based on, I imagine it’s a bit easier if you’re American yourself and know more of the history of said times. And I think most of the characters are kind of written like signifiers of their time more than their own personalities, so because of that I’m not that connected with them yet. Maybe it will get better 🤞

LinaVer | 447 comments Finished chapter 13 today. It is really such a slow read and I think I would have given up already, had I not promised to read it as a buddy read. And also I now want to know what happens to the family, although I have a premonition that it won't be that much good. (view spoiler)

Beth | 1553 comments Finally starting this one tonight. I've seen the movie with Henry Fonda more times than I can remember, but this is my first time reading the book. When I'm done I may do a movie rewatch!

LinaVer | 447 comments I didn’t know that there’s a movie. I might watch it after finishing the book.

Beth | 1553 comments So much about the people affiliated with this movie!

>> Henry Fonda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_F...).... he's Henry Fonda, FFS! Father of Jane and Peter.
>> John Ford (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ford)... director of The Informer (1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), and The Quiet Man (1952)
>> Jane Darwell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Da... birdwoman in Mary Poppins!!!
>> John Carradine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ca...)... Kung Fu's father (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_C...), and star of one of the scariest Night Gallery's (https://midnitereviews.com/2019/08/ni...) I've ever seen #BigSurprise
>>Gregg Toland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregg_T...)... cinematographer of Citizen Kane (#TheGreatestFilmOfAllTime) among others: Wuthering Heights, The Bishop's We, The Best Years of Our Lives.

Beth | 1553 comments Finished the book. It was interesting to read the differences between the move and novel, particularly Rose of Sharon's role. What an amazingly powerful story!

Survival vs heritage... painful dilemma.

Beth | 1553 comments "You're lonely--but you ain't touched." One of my very favorite quotes.

"My dirt... it's no good, but it's mine." #Grandpa #SoothingSyrup

Gah... the scene in the movie where Ma Joad was going through her meager belongings... what to keep, what to burn. 😟

I definitely think this is a case where the 1940 movie was better than the book. I mean, the book was incredible. But the movie... just so much more.

Beth | 1553 comments The whole scene in the restaurant... love.

In the book: "Mae called, “Hey! Wait a minute. You got change.” “You go to hell,” said Bill, and the screen door slammed.

In the 1940 movie: "Mae: You've got change comin'" Bill: "What's it to ya?"
