Hellooo, I'm on chapter 5 i believe! I also enjoy the writing, had some trouble at the first chapter though, but I have gotten adjusted to the writing now and think it's nice!
I stoped reading after I read "someone inside the house was laughing" bc I got really freaked out lol, but will continue today! Anything you have reacted to in the book so far?
Is anybody else interested in joining this read? :)

So, I found it hard initially to determine whether the main character was a boy or a girl cause they gave no clear signs until maybe the last chapter I was on, but otherwise, I liked that it's from a child's perspective, and I wonder how it will play out! :)

Hahah omg yes!! I had the same problem, I now know its a girl but I believe it was her name that got me confused before, "Scout" is a cute name but sounds more like a boy to me. And I never read from a child's perspective before so i'm looking forward to that as well!

I'm bout to start chapter 10 now, um.. i'm not sure what to think of this book yet. The snowman scene was cute. From time to time creepy stuff happens? the laughing, and when the pants or something was folded across the fence??? terrifying. Idk if i have gotten it all wrong but i get these pictures in my head while reading and they're kinda freaking me out so i hope this book will have a turn. AND WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH THOSE MINI SOAP SCULPTURES OF JEM AND SCOUT?! have i gotten this all wrong? i need to watch a summary on yt.

I also wondered who left the figures in the tree and why Mr Radley would lie about the tree and then fill it up with cement???
And to relate this to what you wrote, Is this a horror story??????

I don't think its supposed to be horror lol, but some parts are just creepy. But I guess its supposed to be a little mystery.
Soooo i think the end off chapter 9 made me really curious of whats going to happen next. I liked the story before but NOW I'm really invested.
Yeah, I haven't gotten lost in it yet, but will give it more time.
But I do like the writing, just don't find the story that interesting, but I have still been able to writes some notes so thats something! I'm starting chapter 12 next which is part 2!

So, one of the things I want to bring up for discussion is when they mentioned the title name. I think it was when they got the air rifles and Atticus said:
"id rather have you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'
What are your thoughts on this? Why did the author name the book after this meaningless (at the moment) quote? Is there a deeper meaning behind it?

I actually wrote down the exact same quote, fun that we both had thoughts about it!😅
Tbh i'm not sure yet, but on the same page, Miss Maudie tell Scout, "they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" we just might have to finish the book before we fully can answer it, but it might have to do with Tom Robinson's (potential) innocence, ex. "to charge a innocent man is a sin". What are your thoughts?

Yeah, I was going in that direction, too, with it being a metaphor for the case that Atticus is working on. It is interesting to see how it will play out and connect in the end (if it will).

I also have been wondering about the books actual meaning, like is she just throwing the n-word around or are we gonna get a deeper perspective on how this time was affecting black people? So far I just see how white people (Scouts family) is affected by racism, which dosen't seem right. And the scene when those in the black-church discriminated Scout and Jem for being white? phht please, like the only time black people (other than Cal) has a line in this book and they discriminate?! C'mon, that's not how the real story goes.
Maylowww
Yeah, I agree. This book was written in 1960, so I don't think Harper Lee will acknowledge the racism, as people didn't think it was wrong back then.
Either way, regarding the racism, she wrote this book to show the differences between skin color only, or she will acknowledge the injustice brought upon people of color through the story.

hmm that's true but idk, i might got into this book with the wrong idea? Got this up when i searched on why this book is important, "it vividly demonstrates the effects of racial discrimination in a simple, but startling, manner." So maybe you're right, and it will show more later! You had any other thoughts so far?
"Rape was carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent" This is how Atticus explains rape, do you agree? i'm not sure i understand.

Atticus stated something after she died about that them reading to her was a distraction, and hopefully helping her. So I think her purpose for the plot was to give them a lesson, maybe?

Yeah, so we have read the whole book now and are going to discuss it!!
So, I would like to know your thoughts on the trail. Whose side were you on? Did you believe Tom Robinson or Miss Mayella?
I was undoubtedly on Atticus's side and Tom's. When he tried to take the oath and his left arm slipped off, it showed and greatly impacted my view on wich side I believed in. I had hope for them and thought that he would be found guilty. But when the verdict came, it didn't surprise me, and I felt the same anger as Jem did.

It was very difficult to even try believing Miss Mayella, Tom's innocence became rather obvious when she kept looking over at her dad, searching for his right answers. Atticus really grew on me even more under the trial - loved how he questioned both Mayella and her father and how he lead his case. The trial was definitely the peak of this book, really got hooked on those chapters-which i sadly can't say for the rest of the book.
How Tom's life ended is just so sad and tragic, did not see it coming like that, so I actually got pretty stunned while reading it.
What did you think of the ending with Boo? :)

I didn't really understand the ending. If I got it right, he was the one saving them? If that was the case, then I really liked how it tied in with the beginning, and I see how all the first chapters were relevant. I didn't think they would mention BOO even at all so I was surprised! :)

Yeah i think he did! wasn't 100% sure either but if we both came to the same conclusion its probably what happened lol. I'm giving it 3 out of five stars! one star for the fine writing, another for the message, and then one for the whole trial chapters bc the book really wouldn't be the same and as good without it.
What are your rating it?

I gave it 4/5 because of how well it was written and, as you said, because of the trial chapters. I also love how the ending, as I mentioned earlier, tied together the beginning of the story, and I think this is a great book, as it shows the segregation in America and how people got affected by it. Harper Lee captured and showed it through a great story where we as readers got affected and felt the frustration and anger, as a good book does. I think it's important to teach and read this book in American schools as it's part of their history that should not be forgotten.

Period!!! I'll probably reread it in the future bc there still was some chapters i didn't quite understand but it's a classic for a reason so i want to be able giving it a higher rating but for that i will need to get a better understanding on some parts!
I don't have much more to say now, have you something else you want to bring up and discuss or should we leave it here?
