Magdelanye | 2855 comments May April be awesome
with flowers in blossom
and the joy of trees
renewing their leaves
May the gift of spring
tenderness bring

Petra | 1118 comments Beautiful!! Thanks, Magdelanye, for a great start to the month with a lovely poem.

I love the references to warmth, flowers and greenness.

Petra | 1118 comments I'm reading a mish-mash of books right now:

Look Homeward, Angel, which I'm really enjoying. It's a family saga and I like those. The writing is descriptive without being heavy. It's a fun read.

The Exquisite Machine: The New Science of the Heart. Also interesting. I'm reading it for information after being diagnosed with AFib. Sigh....

I finally got The Grey Wolf audiobook back from the library and can now finish it. It's been a long wait getting it back and I'm glad to continue (and finish) the story.

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments Long summer days in spring. Have started a new 'light/cosy crime' authoring pair M S Morris. 2 series one in Oxford and one up North. Underpinned by an 800 pager A Cavern of Black Ice by J.V. Jones

Magdelanye | 2855 comments Nice days are such nice days.
Glad you finally got Grey Wolf back Petra. Were you able to pick up where you left off approximently or did you begin again?

What is AFib? nothing serious I hope.

Ice, and Ellen in fact, can you explain how crime can be light and cosy?

I am reading another amazing book...what a lovely roll I've been on.
Not sure if I have raved before about Claire North I am not sure if it would be Ice's cup of tea but I am captivated by her style. The dystopia is a bit too close for comfort though. 84K

It's actually easier than the last book I read Roxana Spicer The Traitor's Daughter: Captured by Nazis, Pursued by the KGB, My Mother's Odyssey to Freedom from Her Secret Past. because it happened

Petra | 1118 comments Magdelanye, I rewound a few minutes of the audiobook, but I knew where I was in the story. It's a cliffhanger of an ending.....can't wait for the next book to be published.
Louise Penny ended another book with a cliffhanger (I think it was Book 5 of the series). Books 5 & 6 (or whatever # they are) turned out to be one of my favorite storylines in the series. Maybe Books 19 & 20 (still to be published) will also become a favorite.

AFib is atrial fibrilation (an irregular heartbeat). I'm not sure yet how serious it is or not. I'm stable, feel well and can do pretty much whatever I want, so it's not bad at the moment. I'll know more in a few months time.

I find some crime stories "light and cozy". The Inspector Gamache books fall into that, as do the Andy Carpenter series, I think. I guess Agatha Christie would also be "cozy".

I haven't heard of Claire North. I'll look up her writing.

Petra | 1118 comments I guess I have heard of Claire North afterall.......one of her books (The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August) is on my TBR list!

message 8: by Magdelanye, Senior Flight Attendant (new)

Magdelanye | 2855 comments I liked the first 15 lives just fine although its not quite as compelling as some of her other stuff. Theres something about her writing that really gets to me.

Petra, I do know what AFib is, just hadn't realized it because I was just told irregular heartbeat and I have it too, mild, nothing to worry about. Well, we know getting old is better than the alternative!

Today I started Is Mother Dead (no question mark) Im already triggered!

Glad you were able to pick up and be immediately immersed in your interrupted Grey Wolf.

Magdelanye | 2855 comments A Cavern of Black Ice sounds like something written for you Ice, though it seemed pretty convoluted to me when I looked it up. The names!

Magdelanye | 2855 comments What a strange week it has been. I am not alone in remarking on this. Through it all I am slowly reading The End of Reality: How Four Billionaires are Selling a Fantasy Future of the Metaverse, Mars, and Crypto by Jonathan Taplin I sure hope he will find some hope by the end of the book, because reading this induces that helpless feeling.

The other book I am reading turns out to be another Nazi thriller
My Father's House by Joseph O'Connor This one is set in Italy and is character driven and well researched.

Petra, I hope the grey wolf lived up to expectations
How did you find Look Homeward Angel?

Is Mother Dead by the way was a hit for me, my mom and sister had the same playbook so it was a bit of a shock.

Magdelanye | 2855 comments forgot to include the book I finished yesterday Invisible Prisons: Jack Whalen's Tireless Fight for Justice which is a collaborative effort with Lisa Moore. It's sickening to think about any kind of child abuse but the fact that this was systematic and routine and still goes on made it difficult going but the way that the man himself got his life together is inspiring. His daughter is a lawyer now and working to change things for the benefit of us all.

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments Hi--I'm sorry I've been absent for so long--I need to catch up on reading all the posts but I wanted to say hello at least. I'm already headed out for the day but I'll come back

Magdelanye | 2855 comments wonderful Ellie
looking forward to hearing what you're up to.
And Petra, been wondering about you.
Ice, I trust you are busy in the garden.

I finally am reading The Future, which won Canada Reads last year.
As a fun supplement I watched the 4 episodes which actually was a help in getting in to the book. And it was delightful to see Heather O in action. She is really lovely.
The book is pretty interesting too, if you can tolerate not being clear on whats happening
