UK Book Club discussion

Decades ago I read a novel that I found on a dusty shelf somewhere. I don't remember the author, the title or very much about the story...other than it being a good one.
Here's what I do remember. It was probably written in the 40's or 50's, set between the turn of the century - 1920's. The title was a single word, the surname of the protagonist. Something like 'Barrington'.... I've searched for this, to no avail. He was a doctor, a British doctor involved in some research project which he believed to be unethical. Eventually, he decides that he can't continue, upsticks and goes off to the third world where he builds a hospital, come sanctuary for people with infectious diseases, primarily leprosy.
And that's all I have. Can anyone help?
