Iver Cooper | 3 comments Earthly Reflections The Science of Reflected Light in Our Natural World by Iver P. Cooper This book explores topics in earth science and biology. It examines reflections, specular or diffuse, from clouds, snow and ice, liquid water, rocks, sand, and dust, and plants and animals, and explains the underlying physics. Some of the phenomena are pretty, such as rainbows in the sky, glitter patterns on the ocean, or the iridescence of "play-of-color" opal. And some have profound effects on our lives, by influencing world climate. Several chapters relate to structural colors and iridescence. In animals, these may may directly impact their survival, by helping them find mates, avoid predators, or control their body temperature. Or the color may be attractive, but incidental to the biological function of the structure.

The book is profusely illustrated, with 70 figures (and two tables), many of them color photos. (That is why I am only offering it as an ebook; a color/print edition would have been prohibitively expensive). The ebook is priced at a very reasonable $9.99.
