Melody Brooks, an eleven-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who is unable to speak or walk, is the subject of the poignant and compelling book Out of My Mind. Melody is extremely intelligent and perceptive, even though she is unable to speak. Readers can understand how undervalued and misinterpreted she is by others around her through her internal narration. Her world starts to change when she is able to use a communication device because it gives her the opportunity to finally express the ideas and genius that have always been inside of her.
