Chrissy | 258 comments I just finished this today, really enjoyed it! I found it moving and tragic but somehow hopeful too.

Kat's Bookshelf (kats_bookshelf) | 21 comments I ended up enjoying it, but it took me a minute to get into it. I really disliked the narrator for the first 1/3rd of the book, but was curious about how it would play (no pun intended) out.

Katherine | 2 comments Reluctantly started this book, because I really didn't think I would like it. Wasn't a fan of the first 1/3 of the book, so I'm not sure why I kept reading it. But my mind was changed as things "played out" -- to use the pun above.

McKenzie | 14 comments I agree Katherine - the final section almost moved me to tears. This was not a comfortable read, but looking back on it as a whole, it was very well done.

Jason Perdue | 688 comments I agree that it stuck the landing very well. It seems the marketing of it as funny does it a disservice though as my expectations were to laugh. It's absurd but I didn't laugh

Lauren Oertel | 1390 comments I just finished this today. I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggled at times, but also appreciated it in the end. There were some profound moments, but a lot of the other parts were slippery/not engaging enough for me.

And you're right, Jason. The cover choice set the wrong expectations!

Kat's Bookshelf (kats_bookshelf) | 21 comments Yes! I was expecting it to be funny and while there were amusing parts, it wasn't actually funny. In fact POWs left to starve in the quarry is anything but.
