NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11068 comments I love this book for more reasons than I could list. This was my second reading, and I found it even more moving and thought provoking than the first reading. At the same time, it was far less depressing. (view spoiler) This book contains an unusual mix of topics that stretched my mind and imagination. There were links to other topics I encountered this year, such as the huge garbage patches in the ocean. The most delightful character is a 100 year old Buddhist nun who lives in northern Japan. At this reading, I felt even more fascinated by the character Ruth, based on the book’s author. (I want to read everything she wrote.) She finds a package on the beach in British Columbia that includes a diary written by a teenage girl in Japan, which traveled across the ocean following the Tsunami in Japan. At this reading, I was struck by heroism I didn’t recognize before, as well as weird science connections, history, and philosophical references. The author includes many playful meditations on time, from wordplay, to quantum theory, to Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. She might go a little overboard here, but there is bound to be something to delight you or make you reflect on your own life.

Jgrace | 3937 comments I also loved this book. You make me want to reread it. I listened to Ozeki read the audiobook herself and I don't imagine that anyone else could read it, but if I remember correctly, I also had a paper copy.
I bought a copy for my daughter, but I don't own one. I may need to change that.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11068 comments I was spurred on by reading someone else’s review. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I needed a book that was set north of Tokyo, and knew it was time.

The first time I read it, I alternated between the paper and audio. I liked the footnotes in the book, but I didn't read them all. This time I just listened to the audio. I have the large print book waiting for me at the library, so I’ll look through some of the footnotes when I need to take a break from something else.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 389 comments I checked, because the title was familiar, and I found out I put the book on my 'to-read' shelf back in August 2015. Maybe ten years is long enough to wait its turn. ;-)
Thank you for reminding me.
