Set over the course of one day, a heart-racing story about a woman facing the unimaginable, determined to find safety.
Annie is nine months pregnant and shopping for a crib at IKEA when a massive earthquake hits Portland, Oregon. With no way to reach her husband, no phone or money, and a city left in chaos, she realizes there’s nothing to do but walk.
Making her way across the wreckage of Portland, Annie experiences human desperation and kindness: strangers offering help, a riot at a grocery store, and an unlikely friendship with a young mother. As she walks, Annie reflects on her struggling marriage, her disappointing career, and her anxiety about having a baby. She’s determined to change her life if she can just make it home.
(view spoiler)[ wow, I can't even imagine how scary that would be - to be in Ikea during a huge earthquake
I'm glad she didn't get in that van. I don't know, if you have a bad feeling, you should always lean into it.
and the baby - I hope she feels Bean move soon
her life sounds very tough - like its a struggle harder than it should be. I really hope she finds her husband. that their place is okay. that more people are nice (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ gah, her working through this is so scary but she's all over the place - getting in cars and out. and she stayed with that girl (becky?) for so long it was heartbreaking!
her saying the ground moving was like turbulence was a really good comparison and helped me understand what it might feel like.
and OMG her husband went to the cast calling instead of work - even though he told her he went to work. Ugh, and now he was in downtown portland. Yikes. (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ I love that she found the Ikea girl. but those moments at the school are so so sad - everyone looking for their kids.
her struggle to feel excited and being scared about birth are really common struggles. I don't blame her for her fear
I can't imagine walking this far as pregnant as she is. and I don't blame her for being so so sad she didn't just stay in bed with her husband that morning
but that moment in the class when he used her as a prop - and she said he loved to perform for audiences - I would really struggle with that with a partner (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow for it to finish without a lot of info. I was glad she was ready to tackle the world with her child. I was so so sad that her husband is probably gone.
