Neil Gaimen is also a good choice - Coraline or Neverwhere spring to mind
Another option is to try a short story collection - I often find they don't create quite the same level of Horror
For real horror I would say The Wasp Factory OMG i loved this book and I wouldn't normally choose horror BUT it is not light
