Pages: 393 pages

Length: 1 month (June)

Participants: Beth, Dominique

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Here are some questions to help get the conversation started! Feel free to look up discussion questions specific to this book or come up with your own. Just make sure any questions that contain spoilers are under spoiler tags.
Discussion questions are not required but may be a fun way to talk about the book and get to know each other!

Prior to starting:
What prompted you to join this buddy read?
Have you read this author before? What do you think of their other books?

Mid-read:
What character or ideas do you relate to the most and why?
Do you have any favorite quotes or scenes?

After reading:
What was enjoyable or not-so-enjoyable about this book?
Did this book change your perception about anything, either within the book (character development) or in real life?

Dolores | 19 comments Hi all. I'm going to join this one too... it's another that a Facebook friend challenged me to read in 2025, and it's been sitting on my shelf waiting for the right time. June is it!

Beth | 1552 comments Yay, Dolores! Welcome!

Beth | 1552 comments This is one of my last Buddy Reads for the month, and my plan is to read it over the weekend. We shall see. 🤔

Dolores | 19 comments I'll be starting this later this week. No idea what to expect, but looking forward to it, and to sharing my thoughts here with you.

Dolores | 19 comments Picking this up tonight, and hoping to get through it over the weekend. I'm curious... I love a good classic retelling.

Beth | 1552 comments No, I didn't read it last weekend. Of course I didn't. But I am starting it tonight and will have it done quickly. This is my last Buddy Read for the month!

Dolores | 19 comments I'm with you Beth, reading it this weekend.

Dominique | 1223 comments It was an interesting take on Circe's life (view spoiler)

Dolores | 19 comments Well I didn't finish it in June, but if this thread is still here in a couple of days, I'll loop back with my thoughts. I'm about 30% through and enjoying it so far. I like the fact that while the author explores the classics from a different angle, she doesn't overdo it with poetic license. I love a good retelling. As long as pays some respect to the stories and the authors who inspired it. This one does, at least so far.

Beth | 1552 comments Finished! I enjoyed this one, although I think Song of Achilles edges this one out just a bit.

Circe was certainly a badass! I don't know enough about the Circe myth to really know how much of this book was a retelling of the myth and how much was the author's poetic license, but for me it all came together in a way that was interesting and quite readable.

I completely agree. The fact that she wasted no time to go to her sister's aid knowing that she wouldn't be treated kindly. Then helping her nephew and his betrothed knowing that her brother was pursuing them for the theft of the golden fleece. Then defying Athena by warding her island from her (through extensive spells needing to be repeated) to protect her son.
