Maria D'Antonio | 35 comments I have a MG MS that features a magical talking fox who starts as an antagonist, but he ends on friendly terms with the protagonist. I've been calling him Kitsune to help me stay focused on his personality/magic, but now that the MS is ready for submission, I'm concerned that since I'm not Japanese and this story takes place in the fantastical Arctic Circle (not fictional Japan), that may hinder my chances of an agent or publisher picking up the book.

I'm not attached to the name. The other name I had in mind was Sionnach, since I use Old Irish for the spells and Irish/Celtic for the names of the human characters. Dwarves are named after stones/minerals/flames/mtns, etc, and dragons are literal Chinese translations.

I do want to use a real word for his name, because I think it's fun to use other languages. (Mind was blown when I realized that American Dragon: Jake Long, his last name meant 'dragon' in Chinese. I want to do that in my novel as well).

I just don't want to lose out because of a name that I have no problem changing to a different translation of fox
