Pat W (beekeasy) I finished up the first two chapters of Color of Magic which is a bit under half the book. I haven't seen any other posts about it yet so I guess I will start it up.

Lots of folk say Color of Magic is one of Pratchett's lesser novels because it took him a bit of writing to really get into the flow of things. If that's true then I'm really looking forward to his other work. Color of Magic is pretty great so far. I have gotten quite a few good chuckles out of it.

What I like most about the book is that it reminds me of Neverwinter Nights (PC game) and by extension Dungeons and Dragons if I had ever played. But it takes the fantasy gaming tropes and turns them on their head to highlight how outrageous some of the things would be if they were observed from the outside. The bar brawl was one of my favorite scenes and the bit where Rincewald considers broken tables and doors an occupational hazard of running a bar in a land of questing heroes was an interesting way of looking at it.

My favorite character by far is Hrun the barbarian. He takes fantasy gaming logic to the limit. When Rincewald was terrified of the dangerous temple they were in, Hrun was just plodding along. Like I've done controlling a video game character a thousand times over in random cursed temples, dungeons, caves, cities of the dead, etc. no matter how terrifying or awful the locals say the place is, my characters are entirely too stupid to imagine that. The just go and look for the center, the most dangerous place. Why? Because in the wise words of Hrun the barbarian, 'You find chokeapples under a chokeapple tree. You find treasure under altars. Logic'

Tom | 11 comments Are there chapters in Discworld novelles? I read the Color of Magic ~5 months ago. I liked it by I think other Discworld novelles are much better (for example the witches novelles etc.)

Pat W (beekeasy) Well there are four sections, each about a quarter of the book. The book is short enough that I consider them to be chapters.
