Makara Aikens | 4 comments Hey! Here’s my synopsis and query. I’m honestly unsure what the difference is so I need some help! I’ve just started querying so need some feedback. I feel like the biggest points of my story may not be adequately represented in my synopsis- yet I can’t fit them all in with the suggested page count! The following is what I have sent out in the past (I know the query isn’t quite right, but I think the synopsis is correct?)

Dear editor, I am looking for an editor/agent for my 121,000 debut novel "Of Scorned and Sovereign Souls". The genre is YA Fantasy/Romance/Sci Fi. This novel centers on female empowerment, overcoming the cycle of revenge, and found family. I am a 22 year old student from Nova Scotia, Canada, with degrees in History, English, Celtic Studies, Art, and ongoing secondary Education. I currently work as an English and history teacher and have published poems and works in "Wandering Autumn Magazine" and "Wax Poetry Canada". The novel is not currently represented by any other editor or publisher, and has not been published elsewhere.

This novel is based on my experiences with sexual assault and speaks to the general human experience. It serves as social commentary on the death penalty and revenge in world. Adelaide Ashford is a deeply strong, driven, and brave female protagonist who strives to protect her family and those she loves despite her past. This fantasy novel has world building, but does not cross the line into epic fantasy. It is aimed at young-adults and has potential for a sequel but could also serve as a standalone novel. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Synopsis for Of Scorned and Sovereign Souls:

In 1800s New England, twenty-three-year-old Adelaide Ashford’s life ends in fire. She perishes alongside her beloved father when their family print shop burns to the ground. But death is not the end. Adelaide awakens in Olethros, a realm suspended between life and death, where souls bear the physical scars of their final moments. Her body, once whole, is now a figure of fire and ash.
In The Flame—the first realm of Olethros—Adelaide is told the truth: she was murdered. She has one year to find and kill her murderer if she wishes to return to Earth and reunite with her terminally ill brother, Elias, and their cold, abusive mother. If she fails, she will become a Lost Soul, forever trapped in Olethros.
In her search for answers, Adelaide meets Sebastian De Vrais, a compassionate yet haunted soul from The Vale. As they journey across the five fractured realms, battling the vicious forces of Olethros and grappling with their broken pasts, Adelaide and Sebastian fall deeply in love. But Sebastian’s time is running out; his year in Olethros is almost over, and he teeters on the brink of becoming a Lost Soul.
As Adelaide’s memories of her mother's cruelty rise to the surface, forgiveness seems impossible. Yet Sebastian urges her to relinquish revenge if she hopes to truly free herself. Together with Kaedek, a rogue Vale soul, they uncover the shocking truth: Olethros was created by the Iradatus, a hyper-intelligent tangent designed to test humanity’s ability to break free from cycles of violence and vengeance.
Their journey shatters when Adelaide discovers that Elias has also died, and is not the innocent soul she remembers. Having lost his memories, Elias has become one of the greatest threats in Olethros, leading Lost Souls on a crusade of destruction. Worse, Adelaide learns that Sebastian—her love and partner—was the one who killed her on Earth, driven by grief and rage. Years earlier, Adelaide’s father had been responsible for the deaths of Sebastian and his sister. Seeking revenge, Sebastian set on his journey in Olethros to kill her father before ever meeting Adelaide, but in a turn of events, ended up killing her instead.
Crushed by betrayal, Adelaide nearly succumbs to despair. But when Elias kills Kaedek during their final confrontation, Adelaide’s resolve hardens. She refuses to let Olethros claim more lives. In a climactic scene within Iradatus's core, Adelaide absorbs the tangent’s power, harnessing the strength of all who came before her.
Choosing mercy over vengeance, Adelaide resurrects both Sebastian and Kaedek, restores Sebastian’s lost sister to him, and claims her place as Olethros’s new sovereign. She forgives Sebastian but refuses to free her father’s corrupted soul, acknowledging that some evils must be left behind.
The story closes on a cliffhanger. Though Olethros has been reborn under her rule, Adelaide knows her true journey has just begun: she must find and save Elias—and free the countless Lost Souls still wandering the broken realms. With fire in her veins and an unbreakable will, Adelaide steps forward, sovereign and unafraid.
