Hannah | 3291 comments This is a dystopian novel exploring the descent of Ireland into totalitarianism. It is told through the eyes of Eilish as she is trying desperately to protect her family following the arrest of her husband, a labour union organiser, and the loss of freedom. The book focuses on the dangers of authoritarianism, the importance of holding on to family and community and the struggle for survival against seemingly impossible odds. I found this a very difficult book to read, not because of the themes it covers, but because of the writing style Lynch used, with the lack of paragraph breaks and quotation marks making the story hard to follow.

Joy D | 10077 comments I know what you mean about the writing style. I read the first part in e-book but found it much easier to follow once I switched to audio, which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to read this book. I ended up giving it 5 stars.

I did look at switching to the audio version part-way through, but it was a 5 month wait for the audio at my library so I just pushed through with it. I have got at least one other book by Lynch on my TBR, so I'll plan to listen to that just in case it follows the same writing structure.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11066 comments I’m glad then that I got the audio when it was on sale last year. I def want to read it in 2025. I was waiting for the compass to take me to Ireland, but when I got there I opted for a summer book I wanted to read even more (Long Island). Soon.
