Category 1 By the Numbers
The solstice on Friday, June 20, 2025, happens at the same instant for all of us, everywhere on Earth; only our clocks are different. In the eastern United States, the solstice occurs at 10:42 PM EDT. The maximum axial tilt of Earth's axis towards the sun is 23.44° during the solstice. While the solstice often falls on June 21, it can occur on June 20 or 22 due to the length of the Earth's orbit. At mid-northern latitudes, the length of daylight can be around 15 hours during the solstice but above the Arctic Circle, the sun remains above the horizon for the entire day.
Read a book published in any year ending in 20.
Read a book with two of the numbers 1042 in the page number.
Read a book from a series with 15 or more books.
Read a book that is the 2nd, 3rd or 4th in a series.
Read a book by an author whose first novel was published before they turned 23 (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4... is one place to look).
Category 2 Words, Words, Words
“Solstice” comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). On the summer solstice, the Sun’s path stops advancing northward each day and appears to stop in the sky before going back the other way.
On the solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost position, reaching the Tropic of Cancer and standing still before reversing direction and starting to move south again. In fact, that’s how the Tropic of Cancer got its name. A few thousand years ago, the solstice happened when the Sun was in the constellation of Cancer the Crab.
Read a book whose author's initials can be found in SOLSTICE.
Read a book that where a character stops advancing on some kind of path (physical or metaphorical like a career).
Read a book set in a far northern climate like Canada or the Nordic countries.
Read a book whose MC's first initial can be found in TROPIC OF CANCER.
Read a book that has a very crabby character.
Category 3 Greek Feasts
The ancient Greeks observed their midsummer celebrations with the festival of Kronia, a feast dedicated to the god Kronos. It was believed that, in the time when Kronos ruled the earth, human civilisation was living in a golden age. Life was supported by the gods, meaning that man didn’t need to toil or labour in the fields to ensure a good harvest each year. Since no labour was required, man could live harmoniously without the need for work or slavery.
The ancient Greeks would remember this golden age by feasting together as equals. Slaves were free from their duties to enjoy the festivities and participated in the event's activities as peers and not subordinates. Rich and poor alike came together to enjoy games, drink, and celebrate the year's first harvest.
Read a book whose title begins with a letter in KRONIA.
Read a book with a character who is a nonhuman being.
Read a book with a cover that is significantly golden (your interpretation).
Read a book where someone in dire circumstances gets a reprieve for at least a day.
Read a book that has a harvest scene in it.
Category 4 The Physics of it All
On the summer solstice, you may observe that the Sun’s path across the sky is curved—NOT a straight line. It appears to rise and keeps veering to the right as it passes high overhead. This is quite different from the laser-straight path the Sun moves along in late March and late September, near the equinoxes.
You may also observe that the midday Sun is highest up in the sky (or, lowest if you live in the Southern Hemisphere). But did you know that the Sun’s highest point is getting lower and lower over time? That’s because Earth’s tilt is slowly decreasing.
It may be the “longest day,” but it’s not the latest sunset or the earliest sunrise! The earliest sunrises happen before the summer solstice, and the latest sunsets happen after the summer solstice.
Read a book with something curved on the cover.
Read a book where the MC hikes or travels to a very high point.
Read a book where something is decreasing during the story.
Read a book set in the hemisphere you do not live in.
Read a book where an important scene occurs at either sunrise or sunset.
Category 5 Is the Summer Solstice the First Day of Summer?
It's up for debate! Technically, it depends on whether we’re speaking about the meteorological or astronomical start of the season. Most meteorologists divide the year into four seasons based on the months and the temperature cycle; this allows climate data to be compared and organized more easily. In this system, summer begins on June 1 and ends on August 31. Therefore, the summer solstice is not considered to be the first day of summer, meteorologically speaking.
Astronomically, however, the first day of summer is said to be when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, which occurs on the summer solstice. An almanac (a “calendar of the heavens”) prefers to follow the astronomical interpretation of the seasons and consider the first day of summer to coincide with the summer solstice.
There is also a common debate regarding how the exact timing of the solstice affects the first day of the season. For example, if the solstice occurs at 11:30 P.M. on a Saturday, should we consider that Saturday to be the first day of summer, or should we instead consider the following day (Sunday) to be the first day? Opinions differ here...
Read a book set during the summer.
Read a book whose title begins with a letter found in ALMANAC.
Read a book where two characters debate an issue.
Read a book where a character checks a calendar.
Read a book where an astrological sign is mentioned.
Category 6 Mysterious Stone Circles
Many Neolithic stone circles appear to have been built around the movement of the sun at solstices. Because there are no written accounts from the time, it’s difficult to be definitive about their exact purpose. However, stones appear to be carefully positioned to align with the sun’s movements, framing solar motion on summer and winter solstices. Stones that were placed at the axis of a particular solstice were even shaped with hammerstones to frame the sunrise for those standing in the centre of the circle.
What exactly are stone circles? The short answer is—nobody knows. These ancient structures have baffled scientists and archeologists for generations. One of the reasons why is that they come in all different shapes and sizes. Despite the name, stone circles aren’t actually circular, they’re usually oval or elliptical. And they vary greatly in pattern and design.
There are roughly 35,000 of these megalithic monuments in Europe, many along the Atlantic coast of Spain, France, and Scandinavia, and particularly around England, Ireland, and the islands of Scotland, such as Orkney and the Isle of Lewis.
However, while there’s often a notion that stone circles only exist in Europe, there are in fact many more scattered throughout the world, including some which have been submerged under the sea or lost in the sands of the desert.
Stone circles are old. Very old. Most of the ones in Western European locations date from between 5,000 to 500 B.C., but the oldest in the world can be found in Anatolia, Turkey, and it’s been dated to around 9000 B.C. That’s a whopping 12,000 years—twice as old as the Egyptian pyramids!
Read a book that was published before you were born.
Read a book that has a stone or stones on the cover.
Read a book set somewhere in Europe.
Read a book has the word TURKEY in it.
Read a book published in May, September or December.

Q & A
To be clear on this task: Read a book by an author whose first novel was published before they turned 23...
We don't have to read the first book, just any book by an author first published before they turned 23 (ie, any book okay - no matter when published - as long as the author was originally published before they turned 23?)
The book itself must have been published before the author turned 23.
Would a shifter be considered a nonhuman being?
Yes, absolutely!
The group says "When completing spell outs, many of our challenges direct you to skip a starting A, An or The in a book title. Others allow you to use the A or T - so be sure to check each challenge's rules.
For this challenge do you have a preference? Or are either ok?
Use or ignore the A, An or The at the beginning of a title - your call.
Task for page number, publishing year or month.
Do we use the version we read or the default book?
Not all audiobooks have page numbers. What should we use in that situation?
Use the version you are reading for page number, publishing year or month. For audiobooks, use the hard cover version of the book, as that is how most books are first released.

We don't have to read the first book, just any book by an author first published before they turned 23?

It doesn't matter because the book I chose meets that guideline but that's still a different answer than my questions 😉. What I was trying to ask was any book okay (no matter when published) as long as the author was originally published before age 23.
But sounds like you want us to read a book that itself was published before the author turned 23.

1) the group says "When completing spell outs, many of our challenges direct you to skip a starting A, An or The in a book title. Others allow you to use the A or T - so be sure to check each challenge's rules.
For this challenge do you have a preference? Or are either ok?
2) task for page number, publishing year or month.
Do we use the version we read or the default book?
Not all audiobooks have page numbers. What should we use in that situation?
Thanks in advance ☺️
1. Use or ignore the A, An or The at the beginning of a title - your call.
2. Use the version you are reading for page number, publishing year or month. For audiobooks, use the hard cover version of the book, as that is how most books are first released.
