Jen K | 3143 comments While cute with lots of fun quotes and moments, the story is really about grief. Uncle Patrick has hidden himself away in Palm Springs without truly processing last loss when he is compelled to travel back home to CT for his most recent grief, his best friend since college and sister in law. While he wasn't as close as they were before his bestie married his brother, there is still great love and needed grief. When his brother springs on him the need to look after his young niece and nephew for the summer, his instinct is absolutely not but of course he takes them with the goal to help them process the loss of their mother and teach them about life, guncle style, which includes brunch being the best meal.

Adventures and lots of learning and adapting ensue as Patrick tries to be the best support for his niece and nephew while not exactly having much experience to draw on. I love all his efforts and how his relationship with the two kids grow over the summer. Some rules and events are a bit over the top but this is such a lovely story of bonding, growing and living with grief.
