Happy Thursday!   Welcome to July!!

It's hot.  It's muggy.  It's buggy.  Strawberry season is sadly over in NY, but my raspberries are ripe now.   Planting a raspberry bush years ago is one of the best things I ever did.  Damned thing is trying to take over the back yard but ask me if I mind!

Now I'm off to get my car inspected! Look at me, so responsible, getting it done in the first week of the month!!

**** Admin stuff ****
The  July group read (which could fill "snake on the cover or in the title") is: Sunrise on the Reaping.    You can join the discussion here:  https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

August's group read will be: Remarkably Bright Creatures.

The final poll for September's group read, which could fulfill "A Book About an Overlooked Woman in History," is HERE:
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/3...

This week I've continued to disappoint myself with a lack of reading progress.  Not sure what's going on with me lately.  I just can't stay focused on a book.  My motivation is in the toilet.   I finished NO books this week, but I did DNF one:

Affinity.  this was boring and I never wanted to listen to it.  I didn't get far enough into it to say any more than that. DNF.

My stats are the same as last week.  It's like this week never happened!
Popsugar 80% 40 /50
Must Reads 20% 2 /10
AtY 79% 41 /52
AtY bonus 10% 1 /10
2025 pub 58% 29 /50
NetGalley ratio 83%

I just watched the trailer for the movie "Project Hail Mary" which is coming out next March.  https://youtu.be/m08TxIsFTRI  I am now SUPER excited to see it!!   I love Ryan Gosling and I can't get enough of him.  Have you seen the trailer?  Are you excited too?

I haven't read the book yet, and I think I'm not going to.  I loved The Martian (both the book and the movie), but I'm kind of over Andy Weir.  Not for any particular reason, just too many other more interesting books out there calling my name.
I USED to be a stickler for reading the book first, before the movie.  I insisted on my kids doing it, too.  And then, at some point, I think a movie came out based on a book I hadn't much liked, so I stopped insisting that they read the book first.  And then I started thinking maybe *I* don't need to read the book first, either.  And now, I guess I'm in "I don't care" mode.  If I read the book, I read the book.  If I haven't read the book yet, but I want to see the movie, that's okay, too.

And that leads me to our Question of the Week:

1.  Do you plan to see the movie Project Hail Mary??  Have you read the book?
2. Do you generally read the book before you see a movie based on that book?  Or do you watch the movie first?  Or do you not care?
3. Bonus question if  you HAVE read the book:  is Ryan Gosling the kind of guy you pictured in  your head as Rylant Grace?  Is the quote "I put the 'not' in 'astronaut'" in the book?
4.  Second bonus question!!   Does "Rocky" count as non-verbal?  (because I still need to fill that category lol!!)

Theresa | 2377 comments Good morning! It is another very hot day here in NYC and I am on a bus down the Upper West Side to a closing in midtown. Bus has icy cold A/C, so much better than waiting on hot subway platforms.

Finished:
Dead Dead Girls
Come, Tell Me How You Live

Currently reading:
The Boric Acid Murder - for a periodic table prompt
Bleak House

QOTW: loved the book, and how they showed Rocky's speech was cool and even cooler in audio. Yes, Rocky is a verbal character! Sorry, Nadine!

As for your other questions - not watched trailer yet but saw announcement and picture of Gosling - I think he is perfect casting! This one I will actually go see in the theater!

On the other question - don't remember. That's the type of line that is more memorable heard than read. Perfectly fits the character as you come to know him.

I tend to prefer to read the book first though that doesn't always happen. Key for me is not reading/seeing too close together - neither can be too fresh in my mind when take up tge other.

Also there are adaptations of books I have read that I know from casting and trailer that are totally wrong so I won't see/watch them. Case in point: Murderbot series. I knew from the casting it was a fail and the trailer just put the nail in the coffin for me; there was not a single redeeming element. Pass.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 847 comments Happy Thursday, everyone!

This has been one of those weeks were I did a lot of things, but accomplished very little. I think I’m going to be spending the weekend playing catch-up with all of the household chores, which I’m not really looking forward to.

At least reading-wise it was a productive week. I managed to finish quite a few books from both my TBR and “New Books” lists, and I feel like I’m already making pretty good progress on my reading goals for the month.

Here are my current challenge and TBR totals…

Goodreads Challenge: 228/250 (91% complete)
Mount TBR Challenge: 126/150 (84% complete)

📚Physical TBR: 103/731
📱Ebook TBR: 12/218
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/12
TBR Checklist Total: 126/961 (13% complete)

TBR Books DNFed in 2025: 3

This week I bought several books, including: It Rhymes With Takei, by George Takei; Otaku Vampire's Love Bite, Vol. 4, by Julietta Suzuki; Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki, Vol. 2, by Yû Watase; Killing Time, by M.C. Beaton and R.W. Green; The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder, by John Baxter and Bruce C. Steele; Bring the Magic Home: An Exploration of Design Inspired by Disney Parks, by Sunny Chanel and Ashley Eckstein; and Disney Manga: Stitch and the Samurai: The Complete Collection, by Hiroto Wada.

“New” Books Bought in 2025: 119
“New” Books Read in 2025: 98
“New” Books DNFed in 2025: 0
”New” Books Checklist Total: 82% complete

Here are the books I finished this week…

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~The House of the Seven Gables — I bought a copy of this book because I am going to be visiting Salem later this year, and plan to visit the house that inspired the book’s setting. Unfortunately, I’ve always felt like Hawthorne had a tendency toward long-winded description, and this book included a lot of that. I’m glad that I took the time to read this book, because I thought the characters were interesting, but I wouldn’t say that I particularly liked it. 📚: ⭐️⭐️
~The Island of Doctor Moreau — I thought this was a good story, and found the characters really interesting. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Loch Down Abbey — This is the first book in the Loch Down Abbey series. I thought this was an interesting mystery, and really liked the character of Mrs. MacBain (the housekeeper). I am planning to continue this series at some point. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~A Tarnished Canvas — This is the thirteenth book in the Lady Darby Mystery series. I thought this was a really good mystery, and I’m already looking forward to the next book! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Drinks and Sinkholes: A Cozy Fantasy Novel — This is the first book in the Weary Dragon Inn series. I thought this was a good story, and really liked the characters and the blend of fantasy and mystery. I will definitely be continuing this series in the future. 📱: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~The Invisible Man — This is the novel that inspired my favorite Universal Studios monster movie. The original novel is a very exciting story, which captured and kept my attention from the very beginning. I had a hard time putting this book down, and read most of it in a single afternoon. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~MASH: A Novel about Three Army Doctors — This is the novel that inspired the M*A*S*H movie and television series. While this book was a re-read for me, it had been a very long time since I last read it. It’s a very funny (if irreverent) book, and there were several times when I found myself laughing out loud as I read. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I also had a chance to listen to the audiobook edition of the next book in The Murderbot Diaries series. I am thoroughly enjoying re-reading (re-listening to) these books! The books I listened to this week include:
~Exit Strategy — This is the fourth book in The Murderbot Diaries series. 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
~It Rhymes With Takei — This was a phenomenal graphic memoir! I cannot recommend it highly enough! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror — Although I found this collection of essays interesting, I would have liked it better if I had been more familiar with some of the movies that were discussed. 📚: ⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
None

Finished Reading (Poetry and Drama):
None

DNFed:
None

Currently Reading:
~Network Effect — This is the fifth book in The Murderbot Diaries series. I currently have about two hours remaining in this audiobook. 🎧
~MASH: An Army Surgeon in Korea — I’m currently only a couple of chapters into this memoir, but I’m finding it really interesting so far. 📚
~The Tainted Cup — I’m currently about five chapters into this book, and really liking it. 📚
~Rules for Ruin — I’m having a hard time getting into this book, but I’ve only had a chance to read a few chapters, so I’m reserving judgement for now. 📚

QOTW:
After seeing the trailer for Project Hail Mary, I definitely want to see it, but will probably wait until it is available to stream. I have not read the book, but would like to. I really liked The Martian, so I’d like to read the rest of Andy Weir's books.

I usually try to read the book prior to seeing its movie adaptation, but that doesn’t always work out. Sometimes I don’t realize that the movie was originally a book until after I’ve already seen it, or I just don’t have enough time to read the book prior to seeing the movie in theaters. I used to be very strict about not seeing the movie first, but now I don’t really care.

Bea | 648 comments Happy Thursday, y’all.

Weather: It’s been cooler this week with lower humidity. Now this is weather I can enjoy!

Exercise/Health: Got in a bit of a slump which made exercising tough. I did keep all classes and made it through. The good news is that the insurance is worked out. My gym is now listed under approved locations for the new health vendor. Yay! Now I can take part in other classes without a fee.

Garden: Blueberries have ended. Strawberries never really got going other than one or two at a time, and they are done now. I think next year I will re-do the bed and put in all new strawberry plants.

Yard: Still working on the irrigation system. Seems like it now has another head not functioning. Sent picture to Irrigation company. Tree man came to take down a front yard tree and trim two more of lower limbs. Wow! Now my yard is getting much more sun which should encourage the grass to grow. (My front yard died over the winter.)

Reading: Wow! I have 8 books in progress right now. Guess my slump is over. However, 2-3 are books that I am reading a bit a day due to spiritual reading. Still…books are making a dint in my day for sure. And currently none are audiobooks or ebooks.

I am doing well with ATY and GR goals (over halfway with both) but lagging on PS, although 5 of the waiting library books will work for PS prompts. BTW, whoever has been mentioning the GR bookmarks, you got me hooked. I worked hard to get that last one done before the end of the month! Now to figure out how to make them fit in my challenges.

My car is going in this morning for an oil change and general checkup. I do hope all will be well. I could do with no more big expenses for a bit. Edit: Initially the service rep showed me an $1800+ possible bill. When I asked him to check for recent service completed in past year, it came down to $433.73...a much more possible number.

I am starting to figure out next year’s vacation. I will be doing a Mississippi River Boat Cruise on a paddle-wheeler from New Orleans to Memphis.

Finished:
A Curious Beginning – ATY seasonal, PAS. 4*. A new historical fiction mystery for me. I will be curious to how it develops in future books.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West – ATY #11 (fictional location). 4*. I was mildly surprised that I liked this book much more than I did the movie. I think it was because it focused mostly on Elphaba and her doings and less on Galinda. It was also fuller in that the story of the school was only a piece of the book…not the focus.

Murder in the Dressing Room – GR bookmark June. 3*. A book written by a trans person about trans people. It was at times a bit confusing when the main pronoun was they when the primary trans person was speaking about themself while in the presence of their partner.

Wicked Charms – PAS. 4*. This is the last of this series; although it seems that more stones are needed to be collected, so maybe there will be additional books. Then again maybe not as this book was published in 2015.

Currently Reading:
Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All - ATY #30 (monster), PAS, PS #44 (book I have avoided). 34%. To break up this mass market paperback of over 800 pages, I am reading 15 pages per day. I figure it will take me another 7.5 weeks to finish. However, I am finding it interesting.

Small Miracles for the Jewish Heart: Extraordinary Coincidences from Yesterday and Today – No prompt. I am reading one a day just before bed. 48%

Navigating the Bible: The 5-Minute Guide to Understanding God's Word – I am using this book as a brief overview of whatever Bible book I am reading. Currently it is Romans.

Smith Wigglesworth on Prayer, Power, and Miracles – No prompt. I am reading one essay a day. 40%

Running with Sherman – PS #17 (run club). 80%. Should finish this later today.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead – ATY #5 (intriguing/weird title), PAS. 49%

The Power of Myth – PAS. 20%

On Deck: (library)
In the Clearing – PS #7(cult). (due 7/6 with renewal)
The Little French Bistro – PAS. (due 7/5 with renewal)
The Woman in Cabin 10 – ATY #25 (waves on cover), PAS. (due 7/5 with renewal)
Sister Snake – PS #5 (snake on cover). (due 7/14 with renewal)
The Teller of Small Fortunes – PS #20 (cozy fantasy). (due 7/10 with renewal)
Happiness Falls – PS #43 (nonverbal character), PAS. (due 7/13 with renewal)
A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World – PS #49 (dystopia with happy ending). (due 7/13 with renewal)

PS 22/50
ATY 30/52, Anniversary 9/10, Summer 4000/5000 points
GR 103/200

QotW: 1. Do you plan to see the movie Project Hail Mary?? Have you read the book?
2. Do you generally read the book before you see a movie based on that book? Or do you watch the movie first? Or do you not care?

1. No, I don't plan to see it, but I might. I haven't read the book yet, but it is in my ATY plan for this year.

2. I used to say that I wouldn't see the movie/play before reading the book, BUT: it took me so long to finish the 1400+ page book of Les Miserables that I missed the opportunity to see the Broadway play. PLUS I saw Wicked as a movie (disliked it a lot due to Galinda's attitude) when it came out several months ago and read the book last month and liked it alot! So maybe it doesn't matter?

Skipping the bonus questions since I don't have answers yet.

It's starting to get hot here, which I don't care for at all. It's been making me feel tired all the time.

I'm glad to have a three-day weekend, at least.

Finished:
The Floating World by Axie Oh - 3.5 stars - not for a prompt. Overall, I liked this, but I had thought it was a standalone and didn't realize it was going to have a sequel until I reached the "to be continued" at the end.

Comics & manga:
Rainbow Days, Vol. 16

I am currently at 35/50 for Popsugar (29/40 and 6/10).

Currently reading:
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust - for Popsugar's book with a snake on the cover or in the title. I just started this, so I don't have much of an opinion yet. The basic set up gives Frozen vibes, with the sister who can't touch anyone.

Upcoming/Planned:
The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar - not currently for a prompt.

QOTW:
I haven't watched the trailer yet, but I have read and loved the book. I think Gosling is perfect casting and I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie.

I do like to read books before seeing the movie, but I don't always due to time, or else not knowing it was based on a book. Or sometimes I just bounce off a book but find the film adaptation more accessible. I usually try to treat the book and movie as different versions of the same story.

Kenya Starflight | 985 comments Happy Thursday all! I have today off work (a rarity) so my brain keeps telling me it's Friday, haha...

Not much going on here, except it's hot and the library is busier than usual with school being out and summer programs going on.

Books read this week:

Knights vs. Dinosaurs -- yes, it’s aimed at kids. But sometimes between heavier, more adult reads, I just want to read something goofy about some of King Arthur’s knights fighting some dinosaurs.

A Little Less Broken: How an Autism Diagnosis Finally Made Me Whole -- a powerful account of the author’s struggles with undiagnosed autism, and the relief that came from finally knowing who she was.

Straight -- another Chuck Tingle read, and his first foray into horror (this was published before Camp Damascus and Bury Your Gays). The premise is both absurd and chilling, and it has some powerful things to say about the queer community and about “easy ally-ship.”

With a Vengeance -- I pretty much read anything Riley Sager writes at this point… This one feels like a throwback to Agatha Christie, but with Sager’s usual habit of throwing in twenty twists along the way. A fun ride.

DNF:

Handbook for the Criminally Insane -- I appreciate that this was trying to be a comedic take on a horror novel, and there were some elements I was enjoying despite the lackluster writing. But then the ableist slurs started and I couldn’t keep going.

Water Moon -- the writing style kind of screams “trying too hard.”

Currently reading:

The Best of Catherynne M. Valente, Volume One
Gone South
Any Other City
Living In Italy: Hilarious Expat Adventures - How To Survive The Good Life
Out to Get You: 13 Tales of Weirdness and Woe

QOTW:

I LOVED Project Hail Mary! And I'm looking forward to the movie. I didn't picture Ryan Gosling as the main character when I read -- I was picturing more of an "everyman" guy, not a movie star -- but I also understand that Hollywood wants big names attached to movies to get butts in the seats, hehe...

I don't recall that line being in the book, but I don't remember every single line in said book, so it's possible I missed it. I would count Rocky as verbal -- he just speaks a different language, it doesn't mean he's not verbal.

QOTW: I've read Project Hail Mary multiple times. Ryan Gosling was NOT who I pictured in my head when I imagined Rylan Grace. I thought of someone who looked more like Mark Ruffalo, but not Mark Ruffalo (he's too old - and his voice isn't right - for the part). I am looking forward to the movie! I generally like to read a book before seeing the movie, but it doesn't bother me to see the movie first. If I see the movie, then I have to read the book. I can't just watch.

I don't remember the quote "I put the 'not' in 'astronaut'" in the book. If I had an e-book copy, I'd search for it. I hope someone can be the hero we need.

Is Rocky nonverbal? My first instinct is 'no,' his language is just different. But is it verbal? I suppose it depends on your definition of verbal. Does verbal have to be words? Or does it have to do with the ability to use language? Why couldn't it be tones? Rocky is certainly able to communicate thoughts, feelings, and actions. I think that makes him verbal.

Surviving Autocracy This is very good if sobering analysis, but there's a lot more description of the (attempted) autocracy and very little guidance as to how to survive it.

Water for Elephants This book was recently banned in Utah high schools and now having read it, I can see why. It's a good book, but some of the sex scenes are pretty pornographic.

The First State of Being Enjoyed this one. Funnily enough, two of the books I've been reading talk about Y2K. Oh yes, upstream was the other one. It talked about how it's likely a crisis was prevented by everyone making a big deal, but that it's always hard to prove when something is prevented.

Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen This was also pretty good. The main new idea I learned was psychological standing: that people don't necessarily not act because they lack the motivation to do so but because they feel they lack the legitimacy to do so (a man protesting for women's rights, for example.)

Started: City of Ghosts
Dissent: The History of an American Idea

QotW: No, I don't plan on seeing it. I rarely watch movies. If I did, I would likely want to read the book first. I'm going to answer the bonus question even though I haven't read the book. I don't really visualize as I read, so I very rarely have someone in mind to cast as a character. Also I'm not super familiar with a wide range of actors. The only exception is I want to cast Liam Neeson as the Self Giant.

Hmm, interesting. I HATED the book (DNF'd it), but loved the musical. One of my favorites! The movie I was just meh about. One problem was we were in the very front row which interfered with my enjoyment. But also, I think it was hard to get emotional closure since it only followed the story through halfway of its narrative arc.

They split the story into 2 movies. The second Wicked movie will be out around Christmas I think.

Joanna | 169 comments This is a two week check-in, since I had a busier than usual weekend last week. Between using up the last of my vacation time and attending two picnics, I completely forgot about checking in. This week has been less busy, thank goodness, but I still had plenty of time for reading.

Finished:
The Underdogs of Upson Downs - A charming story that knows how to balance the more comedic elements with the more down-to-earth ones. The ending was a smidge *too* happily ever after for my tastes, and the audiobook narrator gave the main villain an annoying voice (understandable but not fun to listen to), but other than that, I enjoyed it.
The Secret Library - This was just okay for me, but the ending was utterly infuriating! The kind of ending I had to complain about to everyone I know.
The Ribbon Skirt: A Graphic Novel - Good representation, but the overall story was a bit lackluster.
Cassi and the House of Memories - I don't really understand what the author was going for, but the art was pretty cool in spots.
Awakening - I backed the kickstarter for this, but didn't get around to actually reading it until now. I haven't read the original manga, but I watched the two movies when I was a kid (and rewatched them both when the kickstarter was first announced), and it was a decent reimagining of the second half of the first movie.
Across So Many Seas - I listened to the audiobook, and I think that's the way to go, as each of the four narrators across time get their own narrator, and all the songs are actually sung. I enjoyed learning about the different time periods, but I wasn't particularly invested in the stories.
The Other Side of Tomorrow: A Graphic Novel - A heavy read with gorgeous art.
Gooseberry - A slightly frustrating read, as we are in the main character's head, and they have a lot of thoughts.
Manu - I've been meaning to read this one for a long time, and it did not disappoint.
The Magician Next Door - This would have benefited from being longer. The idea is good, but the resolution comes way too fast. And I really didn't appreciate how much the main character was shamed for feeling homesick and sad. Let a girl feel her emotions!
Miss Liberty - (PS A book with silver on the cover) Since this book takes place over a specific amount of time, I read it over that same period of time (for the most part). Which is probably not the best way to do it, since the book is also relatively short. Still, I liked it, and the main character had a decent arc.

QOTW: The only Andy Weir I've ever read was his so-so webcomic back in the day. It's since been republished with a new artist, but I'll forever remember the original, not-very-good, art (no shade, it was a webcomic). I have no plans to see or read Plan Hail Mary, even though it was the most recent winner of a local book award, but if someone I know wanted to see it, I would watch it with them.
I don't usually make a special effort to read a book before seeing the movie, but I am more likely to see a movie based on a book if I've read the book already. Occasionally seeing a movie will inspire me to read the book, but I honestly can't remember the last time that happened.
Also, I have to put in a good word for the Murderbot series. It's been a few years since I read the original book, so I don't remember all the details, but it feels like a decent adaptation, and I've been enjoying each episode.

I also loathed the book, consider it one of the most mean-spirited books I ever read. I enjoyed the musical and thought they turned a sow's ear into a silk purse!

Katy M | 960 comments I'm still reading Caribbean as my book that takes place near water. I'm about halfway through. It's a long book.

QOTW:1. Ihaven't read Project Hail Mary, nor am I planning to see the movie

2. I used to always read the book before the movie, my reasoning being that it takes longer to read the book. But, I've found that I enjoy the movie more if I haven't read the book and having seen the movie doesn't affect my enjoyment of the book.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments It's been so hot this week, I've not wanted to do anything.

One book finished: When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi. Was pretty good - a silly premise but it explores how people react to the inexplicable, as well as facing possible doom. If you're still looking for interconnected stories and are a fan of Scalzi, I think this would fit. It has a loose plot, each chapter is a day in the lunar cycle and they mostly follow different characters.
ATY: 38. Two books with a connection from different genres (I'm pairing this with non-fiction about cheese)

Currently reading Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil and listening to Wearing the Lion.

QOTW:
I haven't read it but my partner's a fan so we will probably go see it. I watch plenty of adaptations where I have no interest in reading the book. If it's a book I really want to read, I'd rather read it first, but films come out so long after the books, it's rare for me not to have got to the book already in those cases. Can't remember the last time I read a book after seeing the film, but it's not something I'm against.

Andrea | 56 comments Happy Thursday, everyone! It seems like the weather can’t make up its mind. It's either a rainstorm or unbearably hot. In fact, while I was typing this earlier, a thunderstorm knocked out the power and I had to start my whole update over! This past week was busy with three job interviews, so I only completed 2 books. I’m really hoping at least one of them turns into an offer.

For Pride Month, I managed to read 9 out of 14 books by LGBTQ+ authors or featuring LGBTQ+ themes, which I’m really happy about. We’re halfway through the year, and it looks like I’m on track to finish all my reading challenges soon. I only have four prompts left for PS and one left for ATY! Once those are done, I plan to start on other challenges (I'm looking at the 52 Book Club and Booklist Queen), filling them in retroactively with books I’ve already read this year.

I also found another challenge that seems right up my alley: the second version of the Hardest Reading Challenge You’ll Ever Do (HRCYED). It's a year-long challenge that officially starts on July 7, but I went ahead and began in June. Since it has over 100 prompts (some customizable!), I don’t think I’ll track my weekly progress here. Instead, I’ll keep up with it on Storygraph and Google Sheets.

2025 Reading Challenges
Popsugar- 46/50
ATY- 52/52; Anniversary- 9/10; Summer- 4500/5000
52 Book Club- _____; Connections- 4/21
Read Good- 12/12 COMPLETED
Buzzword- 6/12; Cover- 6/12

1001 Books- 7/10
TBR- 20/20 COMPLETED

Finished
I Leave It Up to You- I really enjoyed this! It had its emotional moments, but I didn't expect this to be so funny (especially the nephew). The romance was great too! I already filled this prompt, but this would fit perfectly with the LGBTQ+ book that's not about coming out. ☆☆☆☆
ATY Summer #3E- a sentimental book

Problematic Summer Romance- This wasn't my favorite Ali Hazelwood, but it was still good. I finished this in July, so it counted towards the Page-Turner Goodreads Bookmark. ☆☆☆
ATY Summer #1A- a book in a series

Currently Reading
Chlorine
A Room of One's Own & The Voyage Out

QOTW
I have not read Project Hail Mary, but the trailer looks great! I saw The Martian when it came out and enjoyed it, and the directors of PHM have a great track record with delivering entertaining comedies, so I most likely will check the movie out when it premieres.

I do like to read books before the movies, but sometimes I watch a movie without knowing its based on a book, or I'll watch the movie first if I know I won't read the book(s) (Ex. Dune, Game of Thrones, PHM, etc).

When you asked about Rocky being a nonverbal character, I thought you were talking about Rocky Balboa and I was like, I know he mumbles a bit but he can still talk. Then after reading everyone else's replies, it looks like you were referring to some character in PHM, so of course I wouldn't know, lol.

Megan | 481 comments Glad to have an extra-long long weekend, though I'm off on Monday for a dental appointment. At least I will get to enjoy sleeping in past 5:45 a.m. and will have the day to myself after the appointment 😁 I finished two books, though neither seemed to fit any open prompts. I'm at 12/40 and 0/10 for this challenge, and 35/85 for my overall Goodreads Reading Challenge.

Finished:
* How to Solve Your Own Murder written by Kristen Perrin and narrated by Alexandra Dowling and Jaye Jacobs, which is one of my book clubs' picks for July. Really enjoyed it and thought both of the narrators were fabulous; and,
* How To Be A Coffee Bean: 111 Life-Changing Ways To Create Positive Change by Jon Gordon and Damon West, which was a super-fast read and would potentially make a nice daily affirmation reader if you like that sort of thing.

About-to-be-Finished:
* Natural Selection by Elin Hilderbrand, which I should finish this afternoon. It's a short story but is taking me a while to get through since I'm only reading a few pages at a time before bed. It was a bonus short story Prime FirstReads pick from last year.

Currently Reading:
* The Penguin Book of Murder Mysteries edited by Michael Sims;
* The Echo of Old Books by Barbara Davis, which is my other book clubs' pick for July. I'd started it in early June, set it aside to avoid finishing it too far ahead of the July discussion, and now picking it back up;
* A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Best Investment Guide That Money Can Buy by Burton G. Malkiel (about halfway done); and,
* The Simple Path to Wealth: Your Road Map to Financial Independence and a Rich, Free Life by J.L. Collins (which I need to get cracking on before I have to return it!).

QotW:
1. Do you plan to see the movie Project Hail Mary?? Have you read the book?
Probably not. And no, I have not.

2. Do you generally read the book before you see a movie based on that book? Or do you watch the movie first? Or do you not care?
I prefer to read the book first but I find that I often watch the movie first. TBH, I think I end up enjoying the movies more that way...but then have the actors in my mind when I'm reading rather than trying to conjure up my own interpretation.

3. Bonus question if you HAVE read the book: is Ryan Gosling the kind of guy you pictured in your head as Rylant Grace? Is the quote "I put the 'not' in 'astronaut'" in the book?
Even though I haven't read the book, Ryan Gosling would be a reason for me to watch the movie, even if I hadn't intended to, since he's been fabulous in everything I've seen him in! 🌟

4. Second bonus question!! Does "Rocky" count as non-verbal? (because I still need to fill that category lol!!)
I'm no help here but I say that you should interpret "Rocky" and that prompt however you want to..and go ahead and slot this book in for this prompt if you want to, regardless of the majority opinion. I was encouraged to do that for another prompt and I appreciated the advice, so I thought I'd offer that up even though I haven't read the book and have no idea 🤣

Dani Weyand | 388 comments Hello hello and happy Thursday from a humid and hot Columbus! I’m so annoyed that I haven’t gotten to use our pool yet this season because anytime I’m off work and in the mood it’s raining or about to rain. We’ve been doing more indoor activities, I took my son to movies and to our children’s science center to see a new shark exhibit they have. Tonight I’m going to baking, a cherry cobbler and strawberry shortcake for our 4th celebration. Right now I’m sitting at my desk trying to muster the energy to do my nails lol.

Finished:
Hungerstone not for a challenge but I ended up making this the July pick for my book club. I don’t really remember why or when I put a hold on this book but I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading it. I don’t think I realized this was a reimagining of Carmilla. Filled with feminine rage, this is a good read if you’re currently mad at your boyfriend 👀

Meet Felicity: An American Girl for a read harder prompt. Who here was an American Girl girlie growing up? Felicity and Josephina were the two dolls I had, so I was particularly attached to their stories but I most definitely read every book for every girl, collected the cards, had the magazine, made my parents get me the accessories and matching outfits for myself, and snagged any recipe or craft book I could get my grubby 9 year old hands on. So anyway, when there was a prompt to revisit a childhood fave I knew exactly where to go. I feel like I remember these books being much longer and complex than they actually are, I most definitely read this whole thing in less than 20 minutes lol.

Recently Watched still no shows but I did just see The Secret World of Arrietty in theater with my son. If you haven’t seen it it’s based off The Borrowers. It’s a delightful Studio Ghibli film, and even though it doesn’t clear my top 5 its still one I adore. I’m glad I got to see it on the big screen.

QOTW:
1. Yes yes
2. Yes, usually if I care about reading the book I’ll want to read it first.
3. I don’t really picture characters but I love Ryan Gosling so I’m excited lol.

Erin | 370 comments Happy thursday! Got a half day today at work, which I am so happy for- very much looking forward to the long weekend. Didn't do much of anything this week including reading- but I'm feeling back to normal now, and plan to read a few books and finish Squid Games this weekend.

Finished:
Amplitudes: Stories of Queer and Trans Futurity- I thought this was a really interesting collection of queer and trans speculative fiction short stories. I already have holds out on some of the authors other works, because I really enjoyed some of these stories, and the rest I found intriguing enough to give a second try to the author

It has a super low rating right now- so it could count for the less than 3 star prompt. I feel like it's getting review bombed honestly. Some of the low reviews seem genuine, but there are a lot of 1-star ratings I find a little fishy...
-no prompt

Currently reading:
The Jasad Crown- I didn't read much last week, so didn't make any real progress, but I'm still loving it

QotW:
I haven't read the book yet, but the trailer looks good! I usually love Ryan Gosling movies, so I'll add this one to the list. I'm not too worried about reading a book before seeing the movie- unless the movie seems bad, and I don't want it to ruin my first impression of the book.

Hmm I’d say the shark exhibit was pretty cool and worth a visit. Admission is kind of steep if you don’t qualify for the museums for all program, I have a membership since we go pretty frequently. They do have adult only evening events that are very popular, so enough adults find it appealing lol. I did like all the life size models of sharks and I do enjoy our trips there, but most of it is geared toward kids. I don’t think it’s how I’d want to spend $30+parking as a solo adult, but that could just the fact that I’ve been going there regularly since I was a kid lol

Finished Reading:

The Love Fix ⭐⭐⭐ (PS road trip)
Two sisters have letters from their mother's will to deliver. Her books have been so so lately and I've been rounding up to three stars.

Children of Fallen Gods ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Carissa Broadbent does not like to write a short book, but they are never light on plot. Book two of a fantasy world with war between humans with magic and fae with magic. On to the final book.

The Grandest Game ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS free)
So I started this book last July. Anyway I love the 3 povs more than Avery from the origional Inhertiance Games trilogy. I actually figured out the puzzles in this one.

Close Quarters ⭐⭐⭐
I got an Alias prequel novel from a local used book sale. I think I read them all when I was a kid but I can't remember for sure until I read them.

Sandwich ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS menopause)
I was dreading this prompt and gave this a shot because it's short. Following a 54 woman through her family vacation with grown children and aging parents. I was very surprised at how enjoyable this book was. I laughed and cried.

His Majesty's Dragon ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS career change)
I finally got around to this. The start of a fantasy series following English military dragon flyers while in conflict with Napoleon. I had the audiobook and the male narrator doing female voices was a bit obnoxious but not enough to ruin the book.

PS 39/50
ATY 41/52 Anniversary 5/10 Summer 20/25

I haven't read the book and this is me finding out about the movie.

I didn't finish any books. Two of the new releases for which I was on the waiting list came in within 2 days of each other. I'm pretty pleased with how far I got in both in less than a week.

I am almost through with the Tin Flute. The title is odd because it's not a translation of the original title and I think the original makes more sense. I knew vaguely that the book was depressing or sad, so I'm not sure what I was expecting. It is far more engaging that I thought it would be. (It's my Quebec book for my Reading across Canada personal challenge.)

QOTW: I never read the book because I don't like science fiction. Ryan Gosling doesn't make me want to watch a movie, although I liked him as Ken. (I tend to think of him as a supporting actor rather than a lead.)

Tanequil by Terry Brooks for PS 21. book where the main character is a politician. It's fantasy politics and multiple characters being the politicians between two women vying to be leader of the druids and ditto the ruler of the elves. I've been listening to this for months off and on. It wasn't great, too many side quests and then it ends on a ridiculous cliffhanger.

Didn't know about the movie. Haven't really liked Weir's books so I'm going with no I won't be seeing this

Jennifer W | 1823 comments Hi all! Days are blurring together- hot, lazy, try to keep kiddo occupied, repeat. Tomorrow we're going to a park for a picnic in the afternoon and then will probably have an evening bonfire and watch other people's fireworks from our front lawn. The kiddo doesn't like loud noises and this is so convenient- we just hop into bed whenever we feel like we're done! :)
(I can hear some going off now, but I'm beat, so I'll stay parked on the couch watching baseball instead!)

Not much reading this week. Got about halfway through Bone, Vol. 8: Treasure Hunters. Also started Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness for a neurodivergent author. So far it's interesting, but I'd rather go through my health issues than this poor lady's!

QOTW: Haven't read and don't plan to watch Project Hail Mary.
I think the last adult movie I saw in theaters was the remake of Murder on the Orient Express. (and I haven't read the book, but it was a gift to my mom for us to take her to see it). I don't have the attention span for movies like I used to.

In general, if I know it was a book first, I will put off watching the movie until I have the chance to read the book. Usually. Occasionally, there is a book that I'm iffy about reading, and so for the sake of my time, I will watch the movie first and then decide if I want to read the book. I've noticed that whatever format I get to first is usually the version I prefer.

Sorry, no, it is more like they don't speak each other's language not that he's nonverbal. But I did stumble across nonverbal characters in several books I read this year (I personally used the group read Out of My Mind):
How to Age Disgracefully
Wandering Stars
Daughter of Fire

I won't relax completely until the solution is bedded in. I've also been having a lot of back and forth trying to get my dog scheduled for grooming - our groomer is lovely, but not very good at responding to things, and then the heat has meant she's had to reschedule a few times. So, all in all, a more stressful week than I'd have liked. I've been unwinding in the evenings by binging one of my favourite quiz shows, Only Connect.

Reading update: I only managed to finish one book this week, mostly because the others I'm reading are all quite long and dense. I really loved the one I did finish, though: Ecstasy, for the luxury resort prompt. I related so hard to Lena's conflicted feelings about motherhood, friendship and womanhood, and the feverish quality of the writing really drew me in and didn't let go.

QOTW: I haven't read Project Hail Mary and probably won't; it's quite a bit longer than I like, and the premise doesn't wow me enough to get past that. I'm not really able to get to the cinema these days, so I doubt I'll see the film unless my husband decides to stream it. I'm more of a book person than a film/TV person, and he's the opposite, so I generally let him choose what to watch when he's home. When he's away, if I watch TV at all it's mostly sports, quiz shows and a longrunning German detective show that I'm hopelessly behind on.

If I do watch a book adaptation, I prefer to have read the book first, but I'm not strict about it.

Saw the new Jurassic movie, 'Jurassic World: Rebirth'. It was okay, but not as great as others. I would rank it 5 out of 7 when it comes to the 7 films in the franchise now.

Book News:

- I read 12 books in June which is excellent. That seems to be my average each month so that's totally fine. I'm hoping for at least 16 this month though because I have a lot of good books I want to get to before school starts in August.

- In August I'm participating in this reading event/challenge called The Sealey Challenge that challenges you to read a poetry book a day. I doubt I'll read 31 of them, but I'm willing to try to attempt something at least. I've already read most of the poetry books I own so I've been having fun ordering new ones.

*****

Finished:

Our Moon: How Earth's Celestial Companion Transformed the Planet, Guided Evolution, and Made Us Who We Are - 5 star read. I have no words to describe how this book made me feel. I love the existential thoughts and questions and I found myself asking a lot of my own which was fun. I just love questions that don't have direct answers.

*****

Off the Spectrum: Why the Science of Autism Has Failed Women and Girls - 4 stars. My only complaint is that there was a lot of UK research. The author is from the UK so I understand that, but it was because of that where I had an issue because I want to know more research about this particular topic when it comes to the US.

*****

Currently Reading:

America, América: A New History of the New World - A very long book. The author does not hold back on the brutality.

QOTW

1. Do you plan to see the movie Project Hail Mary?

2. Do you generally read the book before you see a movie based on that book? Or do you watch the movie first? Or do you not care?

1. I'm not quite sure yet. I've been meaning to get around to the book, but to me it's one of those 'eventually' books. While I want to read it at some point, I don't consider it a high priority. I haven't even watched the trailer for it yet.

2. I'm the type that reads the book after. I don't like to be spoiled. I learned my lesson from that for 'Star Wars: Attack of the Clones'. I read the novelization version before seeing the movie and I was bored because I already knew everything.

How did you like Squid Games? I watch a lot of K-Drama (well, not A LOT a lot, but some) and we saw season 1, but we just weren't interested in season 2. I thought season 1 felt like a complete story that did not need another season, and I gave some side-eye to some of their casting choices in season 2. It felt like they were just capitalizing on their success rather than they actually had a story to tell. Perhaps ironic, since the theme of the show is "how much will people do for $$"

I usually love Ryan Gosling movies, so I'll add this one to the list.

Same!! A few years ago my daughter decided she had a big crush on him, so we decided to watch every one of his movies. We worked through the entire list, excluding one that I was unable to get from our library or find streaming. It's a really varied assortment, some amazing movies I never would have seen otherwise, so I'm so glad we did that! I saw in an interview that he's only accepting fun and positive roles now because his daughters are getting old enough to see his movies, and tbh I'm kind of glad, I don't think I could take any more depressing movies like Blue Valentine or Beyond the Pines (both super amazing and powerful movies that really affected me and were so depressing that I will never watch them again) Bring on more fun movies like Fall Guy! I am HERE for it!!!

I agree! I love Shalvis's older books, and I still love following her on instagram (mostly because of her dogs!) but her last few books I read have been meh so I've stopped picking up her new releases.

We are exact opposites!! My review of that book was the exact opposite of yours. I'm glad it's finding its fans.

I had been wondering about that. I admit the trailer makes it look pretty good. But I've never been a huge fan of that franchise so I wasn't sure.

I think i'll wait before I see it. We're already locked into seeing the new Superman in this household, so the "summer blockbuster" category is already checked off. (It's not that we are Superman fans, but my daughter loves Nicholas Hoult, and I love Nathan Fillion, and it does look like a fun movie.)

How did you like Squid Games? I watch a lot of K-Drama (well, not A LOT a lot, but some) and we saw season 1, bu..."

Yeah, I thought season 1 was perfect on its own, and didn't need a follow up. I like that kdramas are usually one contained story, so I know it's not going to drag on forever. But then I really liked season 2- I liked a lot of the new characters they added, and how they reworked the setup. I'm not sure how I feel about the new season, I just finished so I'm still thinking about it.

I have seen some quotes from the creator where he says he's exhausted of squid games, and is tired of promoting it. It sounds like he might also find the extra seasons and game version and promo events ironic too

Heather (heatherbowman) | 903 comments I’ve been on a staycation this week and spending a lot of time with my mom and friends. I haven’t had much reading time, but I’m okay with that for this week. I'd rather spend my vacation time with my people and doing all the things we're usually too busy to do together.

Finished
A Deadly Affair (two books with the same title - #1). You can’t go wrong with Agatha Christie. I loved these short stories.

A Deadly Affair (two books with the same title - #2). This was a pretty good historical mystery. I don’t know if I’ll continue the series, but it was entertaining.

Reading
Yellow Jessamine (a book that begins with the letter y)

Geneva (a book that fills a 2024 prompt you'd like to do over)

Inheritors (a book that fills your favorite prompt from the 2015 PS reading challenge)

Crime and Punishment

QOTW
Yes, I’ve read Project Hail Mary. Yes, I plan to see the movie. I think Ryan Gosling is a great casting choice.

Whether I read the book or watch the movie first depends a lot on the story. If it’s a genre I typically enjoy, I’ll usually try to read the book first. If it’s literary fiction, I’ll just watch the movie and skip the book.

Yes, I can see how the style is kind of polarising, in that "you'll either love it or hate it" way! I think I might have liked it less if the characters hadn't reminded me so strongly of people I've known (and sometimes myself). It also helps that it's quite short - I have to be in the right mood for something like this, and I probably wouldn't be able to sustain that over the time it would take me to read 400 or 600 pages.

That's cool. I'm set for Superman also. Huge Superman fan since I was 4 years old so any time there's a new film, I am so there.

Britany | 1698 comments What a great long weekend to be in, I've swam, sweat, and had the perfect summer foods (hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, chips and a prosecco pop (yes a popsicle dipped in a glass of prosecco)) - I'm really enjoying this summer and desperately needed a long weekend break from work to just relax. Work has been seriously testing my NERVES these last few weeks.

The Inmate by Freida McFadden

2.) Tell Me Everything (#37-Same Title #1)

Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins Tell Me Everything by Minka Kelly

QoTW:
1. Do you plan to see the movie Project Hail Mary?? Have you read the book?
Yes and Yes
2. Do you generally read the book before you see a movie based on that book? Or do you watch the movie first? Or do you not care? I try TRY to read the book before the movie, but sometimes I just let that idea go, I also find that it's worthwhile to let some significant time go by before seeing the adaptation to avoid nit picking details apart.
3. Bonus question if you HAVE read the book: is Ryan Gosling the kind of guy you pictured in your head as Rylant Grace? Is the quote "I put the 'not' in 'astronaut'" in the book? I love GOSLING, so I am in for this casting, and I don't remember on the quote! HAHA
4. Second bonus question!! Does "Rocky" count as non-verbal? (because I still need to fill that category lol!! I would say he is technically verbal, just a totally different language.

ATY Anniversary: 9/10
ATY Rejects: 13/28
ATY Rewind: 4/10

Nettle & Bone 4 stars
ATY: Witches/Godesses/Nuns
I switched out the book I already had in this category for this, because it had all 3. It was a little slow to start and it ended rather quick, so it wasn't quite a 5 star.

The Starless Sea 5 stars
Reread.

Iron Kissed Dramatized Adaptation , Bone Crossed Dramatized Adaptation & Silver Borne Dramatized Adaptation 4 stars, 5 stars, 5 stars
I'm going through the Graphic Audio versions of this series.

The Great Halifax Explosion: A World War I Story of Treachery, Tragedy, and Extraordinary Heroism 3 stars
ATY Rejects: Author's name relates to SANDWICHES - Bacon
It was interesting, but there were a few too many editing errors for me to be impressed.

Only When It's Us, Always Only You, Ever After Always 4 stars each
PS: Soccer, ATY Rejects: Related to Shakespeare, PS: Neurodivergent author.
I've had the first book of this series on my TBR for a long time, and the soccer prompt made me finally get around to reading it. And now I'm hooked and I'm speeding through the rest of the series. If anyone's looking for a series that checks off prompts, most of the books in this series work for the soccer prompt, the first one also works for the non-verbal character, the second works for the chronic pain one, and they all work for the neurodivergent author.

Lore Olympus: Volume Six & Lore Olympus: Volume Seven 5 stars each
Rereads.

The Love Fix 4 stars
ATY: Title could be a country song.
The newest Jill Shalvis.

The Dallergut Dream-Making District 5 stars
ATY Anniversary: Translated book
I loved this, but there needs to be a book 3!

The House of Hades

QotW

I've owned the book for several years now and I still haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I always mean to, but then the shiny new books that have library dur dates and the favorites that call to me for a reread always take precedence. I'm going to try, but I might need to watch the movie first to give me the push to read it. Which leads to the next question: I sometimes try to read the book first, but just as often, watching the movie is what gives me the motivation to read it, and I tend to like the movie better if I go in with no preconceived ideas about what things should be like.
