Jasmin Cooper | 18 comments Hi,

I’m interested in data science. I studied it in grad school and although it’s not my main career area right now, a lot of the work I do relates back to it and I’m always looking to learn more. :)

Would love to connect with you!

Marisol | 2 comments I am interested. Feel free to add me! There’s a book about the data bias against women that I’d love to read.

Hi Jasmin!

That's great! I'm not new to data science either,I'm currently enrolled for a part time course on the same. And like you I'm not currently working in this field but I'd like to.I really think some additional reading could help me gain an insight into how to think like a data scientist and how bussinesses use data science. So I've curated a list of a few books (https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...) I'd like to read,if there are any on here that you'd be interested in too perhaps we could do a buddy read?I'm open to recommendations as well :)

Hi Marisol!
Just sent you a friend invite :)
Is the book you are referring to Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men?
I've added it to my TBR as well😊.It seems like a great book so I'm definitely up for reading it.

Ok, that's awesome! Definitely agree; I love any reading about data science/business I can find. That is a great list; I haven't read any of those, and I'm interested in doing a buddy read. I'm interested in reading all of them in the future, but
"Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data" sounds interesting for maybe gaining some insights for applying data to business. :)

Hi Jasmine!
I think Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data is a great choice! I was kind of leaning towards that one myself. Let me know as soon as you get hold of a copy and we can start right away. I was thinking we could give ourselves a month to read it. What do you think?

Keets | 65 comments Off to a slow but good start.I’ve got another book to finish that’s due back at the library soon, so I'm juggling both.
(view spoiler)

I picked up this book because of the phrase "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics" as I've realized how easy it is to mislead people using numbers. For example, all across the world, institutions, govt bodies and think tanks often release reports and rankings on various subjects, sometimes even non quantifiable ones and we often accept these figures at face value. Very few people question the methodologies behind them or attempt to understand how these results were arrived at.
So I thought this book would be a fun and informative way to sharpen my ability to interpret data more critically and become more discerning.

Elizabeth Hawkenson (liz_hawk) | 3 comments If it’s the one by Wheeler, it completely changed my perspective on editorial statistics. I read it in a college course a few years ago

Yes! It's by Charles Wheelan.Wish I'd come across this book in college, would've definitely made my stats classes far more interesting.

Jasmin Cooper | 18 comments Only really read the first few sentences over the weekend and did my first "real" read last night; I'm enjoying it so far. Sometimes humor can be a hit-or-miss in these kinds of books, but I'm liking his writing style.

(view spoiler)

If the book is filled with more of that, I'll be sure to get a lot of it and feel that perspective shift Elizabeth mentioned.

Jasmin Cooper | 18 comments Hello, I’ve been on a different schedule the past two-ish weeks so I’ve had limited reading time, should be back to normal for most of this week 🤞. Will do a full update tomorrow but I’m still enjoying the book, definitely feels like the intro to stats class with the laidback professor that I missed lol.

Jasmin Cooper | 18 comments Hello, the days just keep flying by 😅 but I just finished Chapter 2 and the book is still excellent. Was feeling a bit overwhelmed and wasn’t sure if reading about statistics was the move lol, but his humor makes it easy reading!
