The ISBN of the book I'm about to talk about is 9780140449266.
The page number is supposed to be 1276. A few months ago it was just that; now it is 1312.
The first 28 pages are all in Roman numerals, and these pages include the title page, copyright page, chronology, introduction, further reading, and a note on the text. After that, the story starts with page number 1. At the end, the last page numbered is 1276. Then there are advertisements for the publishing house that are 8 pages long (not numbered).
So we can conclude the last person who edited the page number has counted the entire book, including pages numbered in Roman numerals and advertisements.
