MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 125 comments In this book, we first encounter Avery (Avery Kylie Grambs) who is trying to survive high school and get a usable degree in college after the death of her mother, whereby she goes to live with her sister and sister's on again off again abusive boyfriend. Out of nowhere, a man shows up stating she's required to be present for the reading of his grandfather's will. She does not recognize the grandfather's name or think she has any connection to him at all, so it comes as a complete surprise when, as the will is read, it becomes clear that Mr. Hawthorne has left nominal sums to his family members (2 daughters and 4 grandsons) but the estate and everything else to Avery. She reads a letter he left her, and it basically gives nothing away. But she learns that the letters for the 4 grandsons are identical and each have proverbs in them, leading them to assume he wants them to solve the riddle of Avery's connection to the family by playing a game. In the middle of it all, Avery is attempting to go to private school and handle the estate, as well as keep herself alive, as she is now a target. There also may be some romance in there.

Gosh, I loved everything about this book. The pacing, the riddles, the characters, it was perfectly at my level of reading and comprehension, and I was hooked into the story before 5% and stayed hooked until I finished the book the same day! I highly recommend this one. (I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the romances mentioned, I thought they were sort of forced and the book could do without them, but they got explained in the end.)
I plan to continue the series quickly!

Tagged speculative fiction because what if you inherited billions and billions of dollars from someone upon their death?!?!
