'The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!'

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

Just have to say, the rules of inheritance is absolutely absurd. That women were just completely skipped over and the inheritance, no matter how big or small, went to the next male kin was ridiculous, just saying.

Carrie Wellenberger | 334 comments Oh heavens he called her by her Christian name. The shame. I love some parts of how society was but some things just seem so crazy. That by calling her by her first name was scandalous being a big one.

Carrie Wellenberger | 334 comments So question I have, did Maryanne and Willoughby sleep together? I know that would have completely ruined her in society but not if no one knew? They were alone which implies to me and shows they had bigger priorities over morality of the time. Scandal didn’t stop Willoughby with col Brandon’s ward.

Carrie Wellenberger | 334 comments Happily ever after I guess....both sisters are at least married. Hopefully Maryanne loves or can really learn to love the good man that Colonel Brandon truly is and has always been. I have my skeptical view of how self centered and passionate she is, will she be able to live with that normal kind of love from a man that she doesn't have to chase.

I'm sorry to have fallen behind on this one! I've been deep in the weeds of other books for my master's dissertation. Starting this today.
