SOLVED. Children's book about a girl who can talk to animals between the years 2008-2013. There's an albatross in the story and I think she goes to Brazil, or at least South America at some point.

I remember that she wakes up from a coma after a car accident with a head injury and the first animals she can hear are mice. The book was quite thick and I'm pretty sure it was a sea-foamy green with either a map of Brazil or South America on it. I also remember there being a red and white stripe border of some sort.
