25.1 - Nick KY’s Task : Gothic Types

It’s Spooky Season!!! My preferred spookiness is suspenseful and gothic. Lucky for me there are many types of suspenseful gothic offshoots to choose from.

Read Two Books. Choose either Option 1 or Option 2.
Required: State the option.

One book with the genre "Sequential Art", "Comics", "Comic Book", or "Manga" may be used for this task.

Option 1 - Read two books, one from each of two different lists below:

Early Gothics
Victorian Spiritualism Fiction
Modern Gothics
Sci Fi Horror
Noir -- (1st 25 pages only)

Required: State which lists and which page on the lists your choices fall.

Option 2 – Read two books.

Book 1. Read ONE book from ONE of the lists above.
Required: State which list and which page on the list your choice falls.

Book 2. Because Gothic genres are often “chilly,” read any book, fiction or non-fiction, with snow on the cover.
Required: Post the cover.
Examples:
Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah , As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles (A Food Lovers' Village Mystery, #5) by Leslie Budewitz , Among the Departed (Constable Molly Smith #5) by Vicki Delany , Christmas in Maine A Christian Christmas Romance (A Very Merry State of Love) by Kayla Lowe , Antarctica by Kim Stanley Robinson , The Impossible First From Fire to Ice—Crossing Antarctica Alone by Colin O'Brady

Hi Nick! Would either of these work for winter/snow cover?

The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz

Thanks!

The Writing Retreat definitely works. In the examples I gave, Among the Departed had falling snow, so covers with falling snow work.

The Other Mrs. is difficult to tell. Is that snow on the ground? There is no snow on the roof, so I just don't know. If you want to make a case for it, we'll ask the mods. Otherwise, let's say no to this one, as it's ambiguous, and enjoy reading The Writing Retreat.

The Thorn Birds is definitely on p. 7 of the Modern Gothics list!

Approved. It looks to me like a "freak winter storm" (blurb) complete with snow.
