I would add this book to Tookie’s list of perfect short novels. (From the Louise Erdrich novel The Sentence. ) The story is set over the course of only three days, but it feels full and satisfying. 61 year old Gail learns that she is likely to lose her job the day before her daughter’s wedding, Her ex husband Max arrives with an unwelcome cat (allergies) and must find another place to stay for the weekend. Gail allows him to stay at her house.
I enjoyed all aspects of the story, and the insights that can come from simple dramas. I love Anne Tyler for her character development, and the growth of her characters over time. In this book we only get a few slivers of Gail’s life, but they come together beautifully.
