Nancy Regan When Mr. Right comes along, keep him close, fend off all his potential dance partners, and slobber all over his face. This is the guiding principle of Eddie's life and he sticks to it like a magnet to a refrigerator.

Eddie is a junkyard dog, a blue heeler whose spots would have been rejected by quality control. Mr. Right is Jim, and the new dance partner in Jim's life is the author, Pulitzer Prize winner Mireya Navarro. Navarro can be charitably described as a bit of a disciplinarian (less charitably as a control freak), and the book chronicles her journey from third wheel in Jim's life to sympathetic buddy in Eddie's.

I plan to get a dog in the next few months, so Navarro's descriptions of the trials of dog ownership was a useful reality check for me (I still plan to get a dog). And the book is a fun and breezy read, with bonus Puerto Rican recipes at the end, too.

4 stars, 10/50.
