Our next series read is Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. We'll probably start in June or July.

As we read, feel free to leave commentary on your reading progress and your thoughts on the books. But please, please, please, hide your spoilers!

It's not a challenge or anything. We're just reading as a group to have book talks and what not. Feel free to re-read or just discuss with us. We'd love to have an expert opinion. :)

Awesome!

Can I ask you a favor? I've never read them, so I was wondering if you'd want to help lead the group discussion with me? Like create some questions, and just get people talking about the books.

message 6: by Danique (new)

Danique I've been wanting to start this series for a while, so this is great!

Love these books! You should definitely read them, they're great and they are one of the best greek mythology based books I've read, and I've read quite a few. ;)

Probably July. I've got a lot going on right now, and I want to give people a little break in between the Series Reads.

You're welcome!

Have you read them yet? I haven't, so I kind of want help from someone who has read them with this one.

I have all of them on my Mac. I can try to read the first one before we start. I just want to get some of my ARCs out of the way before my fall and winter ones come in.

I don't know if I want to read it. I'm not too big into books like that. I'm a fan of straight up mythology.

I would love to; sorry this took me so long to get back to you. I'm in the middle of a posting (moving really)... military life, you never know when you’re going to get shipped off or posted to a different province.

I'll do up some question and topics tonight.

The books are very different from the movie. As in it was a very lost reference. You have to read the books; you'll be shocked on how different they are. I was, when I finished the book the first time, I re-watched the move, and I just couldn't get over how much was changed. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie in its own right, but I wish they would have stuck a little closer to the source material.

Milica Jankovic | 2 comments I read Percy Jackson multiple times, and I still laugh at funny parts, so trust me,of you love Greek mythology, you'll love this. it kind of reminds me of Harry Potter, but it's different somehow...

It might be the least-like-the-book remake I've ever seen. I liked the movie as it stands by itself, but as an adaptation of the book it was pretty awful.

I watched the movie before reading the books, so going into it I had nothing to judge, or compare it too. I then started reading on how it was extremely different then the books, so that started my epic obsession with this series. lol .. I would suggest watching the movie first, because if you do it the other way, you might get a little frustrated.

message 23: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (alexandra14) | 112 comments I already saw the movie once, a long time ago, and I remember thinking it was good. I love Greek mythology, so I can't wait to read the book☺

E.A. | 87 comments Topic

Which Greek god would you prefer as a godly parent?

Me: It's a toss up between Athena and Apollo.

Athena because she's awesome. Apollo because of the music and the ability to aim.

message 26: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (alexandra14) | 112 comments I will go with Athena since she's the goddess of intelligence, war strategy, arts, literature.

message 27: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 318 comments I'd have to go with Athena as well, personally. Though I wouldn't complain no matter what haha.

Cas ♛ (rowangalathynius) | 404 comments If I could, I'd pick Artemis. I love her so much! Athena, or Nemesis.

I won't mind Artemis, but she has that whole eternal maiden thing going on..lol

message 32: by Susan (new)

Susan | 169 comments I think Apollo would make a great dad - music, arts, knowledge, and sunshine! Hades would be a cool uncle to visit in the underworld with his 3 headed puppy. :-)

message 33: by E.A. (new)

E.A. | 87 comments Okay let’s reverse this, shall we. Who would you like as godly lover?

Again I would have to say Apollo, or Poseidon.

I grew up on an Island, and I love the water. Heck I'm even in the navy, so I've spent most of my adult life on the ocean.

But there’s just something so romantic about music, poetry, bathing in the sunlight, and of course the ability to hit any target anywhere, any time.

La sigh …. lol

message 34: by E.A. (new)

E.A. | 87 comments Well that last topic seemed to be a bust.

Let's see, what are your thoughts on Percy as the main male lead?

I love him, he isn't annoying, a bit bratty at times but overall a good kid. It's not his fault monsters keep getting him kicked-out of a school. He grows up a lot in the first book, and he comes deal with a lot the insecurities that had been pledging him for most of his childhood. He doesn’t start out as amazing; he just wants to save his mom.

What do you think?

message 35: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 318 comments Would any heterosexual male say anything other than Aphrodite, who, according to the in-book description looks like the most attractive female you could imagine?

message 36: by Susan (new)

Susan | 169 comments Ha ha, Tommy. I think I would have to go with Apollo for my romantic interest.

Thanatos, Ares, or possibly Hades (only if I was sure Persephone wouldn't kill me, but I doubt she'd mind). Seriously.I just love the whole death thing with the gods. I love a lot of the goddesses, but most of the gods I dislike. Ares is just all hot, and Thanatos is just different (the last greek mythology book i read really influenced my choice). Although it is true that Aphrodite would probably kill me for going after Ares...

He's ok. I don't love him, but he's not bad either. My favourite male would have to be Luke Castellan, I would pick Ethan Nakamura but I just dislike him for some reason.

I like Luke as well, he wasn't what you call the bad guy, just misguided and manipulated. I felt for him, and he does redeem himself in book 5.

We usually read one book a month when we do a series read.

As for discussions - I set them up on here so that people can bring up an idea or question as they are reading because we all read at different paces. All of the mods have a lot going on, and going to another medium might just be too much for us.

I also agree Angie. Between work, reviewing, moving, I wouldn't have the time. This form works just fine :)
