Celeste (celestelueck) | 10 comments I just finished reading Chasing the Devil's Tail by David Fulmer. I really enjoyed it. A good mystery that I didn't figure out until the author told me the answer. Give him a try.

message 3: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey | 7 comments So far in 2008, Read the following mysteries:

Field of Blood by Denise Mina
Three Shirt Deal by Stephen Cannell
Down into Darkness by David Lawrence
The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo
Dark of the Moon by John Sanford
The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich

message 4: by Alison (new)

Alison I just finshed The Body Farm by Patricia Cornwell at lunchtime.
I didn't like it as much as the previous Scarpetta books-just didn't hold my interest as much, but still a good book all around.

message 5: by Dfordoom (new)

Dfordoom | 18 comments I just finished Robert van Gulik's The Chinese Lake Murders. It's one of his novels set in Imperial China in the 8th century AD, featuring his detective, the district magistate Judge Dee (who was in fact a real person). A wonderful book.

message 7: by Jim (new)

Jim American Pulp ed. Gorman, Pronzini, Greenberg

"'You wouldn't refuse to help poor little me?' the beautiful blonde said. She leaned over the desk and fluttered her eyelashes at John J. Malone."

One story actually begins with these words. So many stories have a surprise ending to the point that the only surprise is when the characters retain their identities from beginning to end.

The fun is just in getting a slice of crime stories from the 50s. If you liked Double Indeminity, this is just your style. Some big names like Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, Donald E. Westlake, Mickey Spillane, and John D. MacDonald show up, but the bulk comes from people like Norbert Davis and Stephen Marlowe, who aren't as well known today.

Even if the stories are a little creaky, you get the noir sense of guilt and fear hovering over everything, and it is fun to see really good pop fiction done by people who took priced in being able to do it.

"Willie drained his beer quickly. Sally was waiting supper for him. He had reached the door when he heard the shots. The black sedan shot past as he stepped outside and for one awful instant he saw a face. Black eyebrows ... the sneer ... the scar on the cheek. The face of a guy he had known three years ago. And the guy had seen him, too. In his mind, Willie ran. He ran faster than he had ever run in his life -- but his legs didn't run."

Mickey Spillane was awful in all kinds of ways. This he knew how to do.

As a general rule, this book is something that you would want to just taste once in a while to clear your palate. One creaky story with a surprise ending is fun. A lot of them in a row becomes tedious.

Becca I just finished reading another book in that series - Murder Walks the Plank. It was a pretty good read. I always fantasize about having Annie's bookshop whenever I read one of these.

message 9: by Pamela (new)

Pamela I just finished Trouble and Sunstroke by Jesse Kellerman. I love his prose style. If you like his parents' style, you might not like his--it's more fragmentary, more image-driven. I prefer this style. Trouble is a 4.5; Sunstroke, a 3.5 (that was the first of his books). I eagerly await The Genius.

message 10: by Carol (new)

Carol Evans | 5 comments I just finished The Skull Mantra by Eliot Pattison. The mystery was good and complicated, but the setting is what really stood out for me. It is set in Tibet, which is described as beautiful, complicated and difficult place.

message 11: by Jim (last edited Apr 15, 2008 10:01AM) (new)

Jim | 101 comments TREE OF SMOKE BY DENIS JOHNSON

unbelievable recounting the whole Vietnam experience from almost every angle and every social class perspective as well as from the Vietnamese viewpoint

listened to CD set - over 1300 minutes which was certainly long enough but worth every minute
too bad present day politicians don't read more before they take country to war -- might avoid same mistake made 45-50 years ago.

message 12: by Lillian (new)

Lillian | 26 comments I have finished 2 more books
1. Ice Station by Matthew Reilly -rating 3/5
2. Desert Cut by Betty Webb 5/5 This was a riveting read

Ellen | 18 comments False Scent by Ngaio Marsh.

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda Mallet (lmallet) Dead Watch by John Sandford

message 17: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 18 comments The Janus Stone by Elly Griffiths.

A new construction is about to begin but before they can start an old mansion must be leveled. Just as soon as this has begun the skeleton of a child is unearthed under a doorway. Ruth Galloway, forensic archaeologist, is called in to determine the age of the skeleton as well as how many years it's been buried there.
Then a new issue to comes to the forefront. This area was also the site of a Catholic children's Home. Ruth soon finds herself working alongside DCI Nelson once again. And there's just one more issue that may need to be discussed between the two of them.

This is the 2nd book in this series and my 2nd. This series is, in my opinion, excellent. The suspense and the slowly unraveling of a decades old mystery was spell binding.

message 18: by Amber (new)

Amber Foxx (amberfoxx) | 37 comments I thoroughly enjoyed an ARC of The Pot Thief Who Studied Georgia O'Keeffe. I recommend the whole series to those who like humorous mysteries that go off the beaten track. It comes out Jan. 26th.

Remember folks, no author promo in this thread, please be mindful of this stricture. The regulation is firm. My strike will be swift-- to remove any telltale whiff--exuding pandering or solicitation! It has no place here, and will be cast out..

as for me, I am lately reading The Sleepwalkers by Hermann Broch which is a superb European novel of manners, recounting Germany's slide into its ethical morasse 1890-1939...very fine, high, finished prose...

Eek. I hope links to my interview with this other author didn't seem like I was promoting ME. He answered my questions about HIM. It was not meant as self-promotion. Apologies if this smack on the wrist was meant for me.

Nope. 'twas Raymond's post which caught my eye. Decided to omit it from the chat here. Maybe I misjudged it, (if so, I apologize) but it just had a very 'marketing tone' about it.

None of this is a big deal...I just want people to be able to chat without ad-speak all the time in our faces. Seems like ads are proliferating lately. Everywhere one turns.

Great. Poroit's first case. Follow it up sometime with his last case/last novel, 'Curtain' which revisits the same setting.

message 47: by Marc (new)

Marc Daniel | 9 comments Just finished Huntress Moon by Alexandra Sokoloff. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A bit more thriller than mystery, but good.

Also recently finished No such thing as Werewolves, by Chris Fox,
Fate by GG Atcheson. Both good reads but not really in the mystery category.

Ok, back to the original topic: Mystery.

I've been reading some Nordic Noir:
I recently discovered Jussi Adler Olson's Department Q series. It's not Stieg Larsson, but it's definitely worth checking out.

One I wouldn't recommend is Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indriadson. It's not that the story isn't good. It's just a bit too depressing for my tastes.

I am currently reading the Second Deadly Sin by Asa Larsson. A quarter through so far so I'll reserve my judgement.
