Savanes | 2107 comments Memnoch the Devil is the 5th book in the Vampire chronicles series.

The group is reading the series in preparation for reading the Horror Category Winner Prince Lestat later in the year.

Book Summary:
Memnoch the Devil (1995) is the fifth novel in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series, following The Tale of the Body Thief. Some of the themes of this novel and in large part the title are re-borrowed from the old Irish gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer. In this story, Lestat is approached by the Devil and offered a job at his side.

We will start reading as group on May 15.

Please use spoiler tags whenever appropriate. We wouldn't want to spoil the book for the others!!

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I sort of skim - read this book, because I found it utterly boring and annoying. I would classify myself as a slightly anti - church (actually, I'm very anti church, but only slightly anti - religious) atheist who feels that some ideas of Buddhist philosophy are quite helpful in leading a good life. I'm sure Christianity and other religions serve a similar purpose for other people and I'm totally fine with that as long as it doesn't lead to anyone feeling entitled to morally judge others. So, I have a hard time with inclusion of too many religious ideas or ideals .. and this one seems to be a very bizarre journey through traditional Christian ideas. There is no plot in it apart from that ... I don't know if a Christian would like this .. it doesn't seem very respectful to the religion either throwing in Lestat and all that nonsense .. but it certainly holds zero enjoyment for someone who does not care about these themes.

I hope the next book will at least provide an actual plot again .. I can't imagine Mrs Rice writing 6 more books on her weird religious ideas ... but if not, I'm going to resort to reading plot summaries until we get to the award winner.

Savanes | 2107 comments I'm very impressed with you Janina. You seem to "dislike" most books in the series but you still keep on reading the series.

I understand what you mean about religion. Regardless of my beliefs, I hate books that revolve around that theme.

She did that with BDB last year too lol

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments Well, I want to read the award winner and these build up to it. But, while BDB was at least an easy read with some ups and downs, this series seems to be deteriorating and it's hard to read (for me). So, unless that changes, it'll be more summaries and skimming through the books from now on.

I don't think Memnoch has a single place in the book that you could open without the word "God" on it ... feels that way at least. Very weird considering that the topic is vampire sensuality.

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I think most (if not all) BDB were better than this one tbh. Somewhat offensive, but at least there was romance and all that.

Praise* for BDB from Janina, who'd have thought it? ;)

*Yes I know it's not really praise, I'm just messing.
