I am so pissed off at the electric company! The electric company we have here in my area of Ohio, is called First Energy. Recently, they had the BRILLIANT idea of giving all customers 2 CFL light bulbs, whether you want them or not, so that they (the company) can comply with new rules set up by the state to lower consumer consumption and hopefully cost. Then the company said that they were going to charge every customer $21.00+ per year to pay for the light bulbs, which you can by for about $3.00 a piece on your own. The PUCO, which is supposed to protect consumers, threw a fit. So now the plan is to only give bulbs to customers who want them, but we are all getting a rate increase.

Now the latest is if you lower your consumption, they will now tack on a charge at the end of the year to "keep the company even". So, if you are trying to save the planet, and lower your bill, they are going to screw you to the wall anyway!

KarenLee I can't think of a better idea, DJ. Certainly using reason and logic isn't going to help understand this.

Kim, my sympathies. Afraid I can't offer more than outrage.

All I can say is to keep doing what you can to help the environment and hope that if enough of us do it, then companies will finally have to realize that we are NOT made of money. Just the other day, there was an article in my paper saying that federal forecasters are predicting gasoline prices to be at or around $3/gallon again this summer as crude barrel prices could near or top $80 as countries like China recover from the economic down turn.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this what contributed to the majority of the economic disaster in the first palce?! People lost jobs and businesses shut down due to the rising cost of fuel, and now just as the economy is starting to show signs that it may be ready to bounce back, it goes to Hades in a hand basket all over again just because some greedy oil overlord isn't happy with making 3 trillion dollars instead of 6 trillion?!

Where does this stop? Are we heading back to the days of feudal lords and serfs? Sorry, little cranky here. My job depends on people working and part of my job entails taking the kids places, so if most of my salary goes for gas.....how I am I supposed to survive?

We keep having to do more and more with less and less. Money needs to go further and further, yet companies keep raising prices and cutting package sizes to keep up profits, yet we are not getting raises, or bonuses.

How are we supposed to survive if we can barely take care of basic needs?

The electric company is at it again! Now, with the permission of the PUCO which is SUPPOSED to protect consumers from the utilities, they are going offer the light bulbs but EVERYONE is going to pay for the bulbs even if you don't opt into the program. The average customer will see an increase of $1.50/month for 36 months which averages out to $54 for at total.

Here's the kicker: If you use the bulbs, it will save $49,but you will be paying $54 for the privilege.

I saw a commercial last night that stated that if every American home replaced one light bulb with an energy efficient one, that we could save $300 billion. Now, I am all for the environment and saving it, and have been at this a long time (before it was popular) and have no problem with the idea of being more energy resources saved, but I do have a royal problem with the power companies. As we become more efficient due to federal laws, the power companies are whining that they are losing money because we are not using as much power.

Duh!

So,there is a bill in Ohio that may pass due to passive measures on the Governor's part by letting it sit on his desk, which will allow it to pass due to not vetoing it or passing it outright. This will cost the average homeowner $550 over a period of 3 years due to the lower usage of energy.

So how is this saving consumers anything?

I want my $3oo billion.

And let's not forget the HUGE increase in disposal costs for these new bulbs. The miserable things are toxic waste hazards. So, the electric company is unhappy, they're making us unhappy, and we'll be poisoning ourselves and/or the world whenever we need to change a light bulb. Hmmm....
