Here's a place to discuss between-the-war books that are not official Group Reads.

I've moved The Winter Ghosts to this folder to avoid confusion.

DJ (djdivaofjava) Gabriele,Thank you very much.Apologies for my unsolicited post..It just seemed Christmas Appropriate.I would not have done this if we had had an official December Read.
Sincerely Yours DJ.

Hey DJ, you merely put your post in the wrong place! I told you the moderator would help you. I'm still learning my way around forum ettiquette, too! :) I'll let you know if I find the book.

No problem, DJ! I'm delighted that members want to start threads. I'm just doing a bit of housekeeping. I'll be interested to hear your comments about the book. : )

Good morning Gabriele,

I have an unusual request for you. I read a book approx. 3 years ago about a man who had a heart attack and his experiences in the Canadian health system. It was told by his wife and was more a memoir of her experiences, both with getting him care and adjusting to his having had a heart attack in mid-life. There was a picture of two fried eggs on the cover, in a heart-shaped skillet (I think). I cannot remember the name of it. You are my Canadian connection -- do you have any idea of the name of this book?

Jeannette

Jeannette, I'm afraid I can't help. I did do a quick check on the Chapters online store, but didn't see a cover like that. As you can imagine, there are hundreds of books on heart attacks. Sorry!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

It is driving me crazy, because it was a good story, more about their relationship than the medical system. I'll keep thinking on it.

Reading by Lightning was recommended on another thread. You might be interested in it Gabrielle.

Thanks, Jeannette. Could you add it to our bookshelf?

Hey, glad you found that other book!

There is a group on GR called "What's the Name of That Book??" Lee found it right after I posted.

I will add "Reading by Lightning" for the group. I haven't it, but it fits the era and it's set in Canada.

Thanks, Jeannette. And that sounds like a really helpful group!

I have helped two people already. And some of the book descriptions can be pretty crazy!

Sounds like something for sleuths. : )

Someone was looking for Maisie Dobbs; someone else was looking for "The Dark is Rising" series. In the latter case, they had just joined Goodreads, posted the book description and I answered. They had been looking for months on other sources! It is kind of fun to come up with a book for someone.

message 17: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) Jeannette, speaking of the Dark is Rising series, what is the name of the first book?

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Over Sea, Under Stone

It is not the best in the series.

Well done, Miss Marple! : )

Lee (leekat) Thanks Jeannette!

You are welcome. Are you reading them? If so, keep going to the second book. It is so much better than the first.

message 22: by Lee (new)

Lee (leekat) I might give them a go!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

They are very good as a series, especially if you like Arthurian legend and Celtic mythology.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 43 comments I really dug those books growing up, even the first one. (I read the second one first, too. But the first one is probably necessary to have read to know who the people are in the third one, Greenwitch.)

I had to force my daughter to read Over Sea, Under Stone. I can't figure out why the books with the 3 siblings in them were just not as good as the books with Will.

I just added Rules of Civility to the group's bookshelf. The story is set in 1938 NYC. I really enjoyed it!

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments This one is certainly getting some good reviews.

I'm not sure; but Over Sea, Under Stone was written about a decade before the others in the series; maybe that had something to do with it?

The books in The Dark Is Rising Sequence which feature the kids were just not as good. The Dark Is Rising, and the last two in the sequence were the best. I'll have to read these again some day.

Deservedly so, in my opinion. Well-written, great characters, and not predictable in any way.
