I felt that it started slowly when it was bogged down in the who's who of the upper echelons of NYC society of the 1870s, but then once it moved on to the heart of the book, it greatly improved. I enjoyed the struggle of the heart - whether to choose "duty" or be tempted by "passion" - whether to fight for one's individualism or conform to society's rules of proper behavior.
Wharton's own struggle to do what she wished versus what society wished was obvious in this book.
